Chappell Roan

I feel like this is a case of just because it’s always been that way, doesn’t mean it always has to be that way and I don’t blame her for trying to make her boundaries clear as early on as possible. I am interested to see where this goes though, as she’s the first person to blow up like this without playing along. If she can still make it without the paps and media on her side then that’s a huge credit to her.

I believe she does have bipolar too so I can imagine blowing up this quickly isn’t doing great things for her mental health.

Yeah I was just going to comment about this. A part of me is sympathetic to her because it’s an insane situation in general but especially if you’re dealing with mental health already

At the same time I don’t think she’s helping herself at all and from the messaging she has been sending she has a lot of say in whether to do x or y which doesn’t come off great when she makes decisions that are unpopular or says silly things. I’m sure her team or label is also somewhat to blame for this because they really should have put their foot down and told her its time to hand over her social media

OK so first off I'm gonna say I don't like her music, I'm a classic hip-hop obsessive so her music isn't my bag, although my youngest daughter likes her and told me about this.

I think:

1. Speaking as a domestic abuse survivor and with the knowledge that TWO WOMEN ARE KILLED IN THE UK PER WEEK BY THEIR INTIMATE PARTNER, comparing fame to an abusive husband is tone deaf at best, narcissistic at worse
2. There are thousands of really gifted artists out there who would sell a kidney to have the fame this woman has. And presumably she wanted it too otherwise why commit your music to a recording and sign to a label? If you don't want fame then don't disseminate your music, just play it for yourself or for close friends?
3. Artists like Chappell Roan get where they are due to the love and support of fans. To turn around and cancel gigs (but do the VMAs) and write ESSAYS about how fame is abusive - she's basically taking her fans' love and support, stamping on it, spitting on it and throwing it back in their faces.

really girl you have money now, have you noticed that millions of people all over the world are struggling financially, inclduing probably your own fans? Has it occurred to you that we all have aspects of our jobs we don't like but do it anyway?

So, so, so not a good look.

I couldn't name a single song by her, but I'm starting to really dislike her. Every single thing I've heard about her has been negative. Does she ever actually say anything positive about anything or anyone?

I read part of an interview with her in the Rolling Stone, and rather than expressing gratitude that all her hard work has paid off and she's getting so much recognition and respect in the industry, she's whinging that people didn't recognise her genius earlier! Direct quote: "What's so infuriating is that people are just now taking me seriously. Like, you know what, witch? I've been doing this tit and you're just now catching up."

She comes across as a pretentious arrogant brat, who believes she's some sort of revolutionary genius but actually just behaves like a posh performing arts student spilling word salad and dressing up like early 2000s Lady Gaga.

I also detest the way she uses the word "witch" every five seconds, especially when speaking about other women.

She can't stick to her own boundaries, because she craves the fame but only wants it on her terms (ie. she gets to say and do whatever she wants, and people automatically know enough to understand exactly what she means and agree, and nobody is allowed to critique her).

You can't insist you're 'Chappell' and that people don't know you and that you don't owe them anything, while also expecting them to defend your poorly explained video about the US general elections. Especially why bailing on what you do genuinely legally owe them (your performances that you have sold them tickets for) particularly for reasons like 'I actually want to do the VMA rehearsals instead but I also don't want to be more famous' and 'In the wake of backlash against my political videos I'm suddenly too overwhelmed to do this'.

So much of the controversy around her would disappear within a week if she just got off the bleeping internet. But she won't, because she desperately wants the attention.

I have some sympathy for her - suddenly becoming famous can be very hard to deal with. A friend of mine was in a 90s pop band that was pretty successful, and didn't expect to be recognised so much being quite a shy person - she was quite glad when it all ended.

But maybe wearing outlandish costumes and seeking an even wider audience by doing the VMAs instead of doing shows isn't the way to go about it all.

It would be quite easy for her to just release music and have no photos of her or any videos to promote them, for example.

I don't get the fuss at all music-wise. Certainly tuneful and a great voice, but nothing we haven't heard before. Most of her songs sound like more polished versions of early Lana demos, such as Serial Killer.

The LGBTQ+ fans she appeals to is probably a big draw tbf

I don’t think we’ve had many musicians who are openly LGBTQ+ from the start and seemingly make that a part of their onstage persona through drag

oh drag is almost passe at this point, its been in vogue for about 10y now, shes going to have to turn to something new for her 'niche' soon. Next album will be interesting!

I mean so has everything with the current pop girlies really

I think you also have to look at it from the generation of current 20+ yos

A lot of the girlies (or not girlies) who have done similar things before were popular when they were kids or very young. Or they’re still popular but not at the same level/are basically inactive

I don’t think there’s much general public interest for her so whatever she does next will probably be for the fan base she has acquired now. With everything going on that’s probably more suitable for her tbf

She's so zoomer that she really gets on my tits.

But she's right about not endorsing Harris. Just because that's the least worst option that doesn't mean people should pretend it's good. I doubt Billie E and similar are helping at all with their video endorsements of Harris.

Her current actions are building her up to be far bigger than she would be with just the music. Maybe that was always the plan.

I think that itself is just a zoomer thing. they refuse to accept they're only really appreciated for their day job and not their politics/acting if a singer/vice versa etc

The cynic in me was just mulling over the thought that this is all just part of the markting plan. Cancel the events that booked her before she hit the headlines (probably at a lower fee than she would get now), have a few shows next year that will be the rare occasion to spot this shy musical unicorn and milk it for all the fees and money.
I'm a veteran of the 'cheeky Avril Lavigne knocked on Linda Perry's door and just demanded to work with her' marketing blib. Nothing will surprise me.

Chappell Roan really needs to pick a lane. She’s angry all the time at the basic factors of fame; photographers shouting at you to turn is not a personal attack.

People asking you for selfies or autographs is tiresome I’m sure, but bawling out about it is whiny at best and bleeping ungrateful at worst.

I like her music but she’s starting to come across as a spoiled bleeping brat, which she is likely to wear as a badge of honour, but when you don’t have a solid body of respected work, and an established long lasting fan base is a fool’s move.

Nobody likes a whinger.
