Amy Winehouse

I think people have a bit of rose tinted glasses with Amy Winehouse though. She was tabloid fodder akin to Pete Doherty in the years before she died. Then as always, when they do die the press change their mind and makes them into a saint. She had 5 years in the wilderness after Back To Black
Yes. People forget her concerts were shocking towards the end. She could barely stand up and seemed bewildered and vacant whilst on stage. I saw her in concert and it was painful for a variety of reasons. I also feel the persona she had, I know she was this great torch singer but I felt it was retro in the worst way.

She was a phenomenal sing songwriter. Love is a losing Game inspired Prince. It's just she had a bit of a cavalier attitude and an ambivalence about performing I felt.

I think she thought her talent superseded her ambition. It can only be speculation but I wonder how she would have evolved.

Am I the only one who thought she was overrated, she had a good voice but I couldn't take to her songs with the exception of F*** Me Pumps and Rehab.
You aren't.

Amy couldn't really get any traction with her first album. I liked a fair bit of it - You Sent Me Flying is probably the standout.

But I found even then listening to more than ten minutes of her voice a bit hard going. It was very mannered and derivative of Billie Holiday, let's face it.

As I've said elsewhere on this thread, she never had a good reputation for being a dependable performer, or even getting to the gig. Her management in the Frank era did well to cover this up. Her later management did the right thing in seeing this as a strength - well, the right thing if you're OK with exploiting someone who had stage fright and was essentially damaged goods. And, as we all know, a person who's damaged does translate to a hell of a lot of press coverage.

It's a very sad ending to her life but, alas, it was predictable.

That’s the saddest thing for me. She really was getting well again. Years before, yes for us it was predictable, but not at the time she went.

Some Amy fans are nuts and take things too far sometimes!

I have an Amy Instagram account on the side and one of the big accounts on there (amywinehousecommunity) was posting all this stuff that Amy was bi-sexual, Amy was an ally etc. for pride, and everyone was commenting omg wow, so excited to find this out, they didn't know etc... someone commented that that was rubbish and she was straight and I agreed with them and I've been immediately blocked! It's not for anyone to surmise on her sexuality over ten years after her death, how dare people do this, it makes me angry. A lot of Amy fans are so obsessive and seem to think they actually really know her, and are almost competitive in how much they know her more than others. It's bizarre.

Anyway this account is spreading this because of that Reclaiming Amy documentary where her "friend" Catriona claimed to have slept with her, ten years later. Other commenters were actually using it as a source "if you'd watched reclaiming amy you would know" - yeesh. We chatted on this thread before about how disgraceful that programme was; Amy can't confirm or deny anything, and I personally don't believe it but even if it were true, it's the last piece of her privacy to be sold off by, guess who, Mitch and fake friends, as always. The Asif Kapadia is the only trustworthy documentary (you know, the one with her actual friends?) and I stand by that.

@clueless Its really interesting to hear your perspective as a meg-fan, and to see what other fans are like. I agree. You just don’t do that. It’s too personal.

I saw this book mentioned on Twitter by whoever is behind the official Amy Winehouse account, and even hardcore fans were saying things along the lines of, “no, this is too much“.

It’s called “in her own words”, but I feel like it’s more, “her own private things” and should be left alone.

I was not expecting her to die at the point she did. Back when she was eight Blake it wouldn’t have surprised me at all.

In the words of Amy "Life is short. I have to seize the moment." - Amy Winehouse you certainly did and your music will never die
