Actually Honest - skincare and makeup reviews #4

Exfoliate, lightly moisturise ankles/heels and any dry areas. Don't overspread the fake tan or it'll go streaky, put a good amount on. Beware of any splashes of water soon after applying your fake tan or it'll go patchy.
I just use silicone gloves to apply, no mitt.
I've tried loads of fake tans, my favourite is Bondi Sands for my face and Lidl mousse in dark is really good for legs and only £4! 😁
Thanks you, I’m screen shotting all the advice to try over xmas 😊

Is Glossier makeup any good?
Hit and miss tbh. I rate their mascara for everyday use, it’s quite natural looking and never clumpy/obvious in a bad way. I also like their brow gel and ultra lip.
Didn’t rate the skin tint or their eyeshadow mini palettes.

I do think they've upped their prices a lot in the last few years so I’m less likely to repurchase/recommend than I was previously

Oooh I never thought of using a different one for my face. Another vote for the Lidl one but in ultra dark as I'm paler than Casper

Yes, ultra dark for me too, I made a mistake! I slap a good layer on, shower off after 6hrs, then the same the next day if I can be bothered! It doesn't make it darker really, just richer and more even. I have medium, pink toned skin.
I find some fake tan can collect in the pores on my face, but Bondi Sands worked really well.

I think brands like Glossier can be summed up by the fact they go from allll the influencers under the sun raving about them (cause they’re paid to) then hardly anyone ever mentioning them! For ages they were the ‘must have’ brand but I don’t know anyone that still talks about them or shops there much. Aside from the odd single product.

To me that suggests they were more about the marketing hype than anything of substance. Brands shook themselves in the foot when they do that mass influencer ad campaign.

I’m amateur at fake tan (2-3 times a year) but miraculously it goes well using an aldi mousse.
I moisturise my knees & elbows but also inside forearms, wrists and ankles and use a mitt. I use the back of the mitt to blend around the ankles and wrists, inside of forearms and then use that on my face avoiding eyebrows so there’s quite little product but enough for a glow.
Basically anywhere I don’t want it to take too much or have a harsh line gets moisturiser first and the back of the mitt and it sort of blends into it imo.

Thank you. I’m going to try this over Xmas. I love having my face a bit “brown”. I just look so healthy now 😅

I use a face tanning spray from b&m - tantalize, spray on and run a makeup brush over it to make sure it’s even, would thoroughly recommend. I use medium and you can see it after a few hours when I put it on on a morning. You can build it up with extra applications if needed. I used to use the tanning drops mixed with serum but I would sometimes mess up with those; the spray has been foolproof

This is what always makes me suspicious. I remember every influencer I'd ever heard of going on about some perfume or other a few years back (I think it was Elizabeth and James) and it was everywhere for a short period. I didn't even follow many bloggers but saw all the posts on bloglovin if anyone remembers that. Anyway, it passed and not a dicky bird. Surely brands can drip-feed their products to influencers on a staggered scale based on numbers or whatever else? It just makes me distrust them more.

I feel like that about so many products/brands. Skin and Me, Wild deodorant, Abbott Lyon, FreeSoul greens. The more I see of it the less it makes me want to buy it!

I actually think Glossier was really good, but then so many followed a similar playbook with a small curation of ‘cute’ but nice products and as the section of beauty got more competitive, Glossier just couldn’t keep up.

There was also a shift with them when they gained huge investment and lost a lot of their key people such as their social and creative team etc…

they still have GOOD products but for a similar price and make up look, I’d recommend Saie beauty, I find them to provide more bang for your $$$

Seems like Ilia and Merit are everywhere now- might be another influencer push brand situation.
Merit is gorgeous, as is Ilia and Saie. You probably see more of an influencer push for it because they’re exclusive to themselves like you cant shop it in store here via other retailers so it does rely on that word of mouth

I can't find this in store, does in come and go?!

No, I don't think so. It's in a white bottle in the cosmetics section. In the one i go to it's on the bottom shelf, I nearly missed it the first time I went looking but I am as blind as a bat! 🤣

I could not even find cosmetics, only toiletries and candles! :)

I have a bit of a thing about checking out the skincare, haircare and makeup products when I’m abroad. Usually the brands made in that country but I don’t discriminate! I’m off to Germany soon and wondered if there are particular brands I should go have a look at? I’m aware of Essence of course. Love their nail oil and their mascara (but hit me up with other top tips!). No idea if German pharmacies have anything that is prescription only in the UK but readily available that I should try to hunt down? I’m well stocked up with tretinoin (and TTC so no tret for me right now anyway!) if you can even buy it OTC, anything else?

The bath salts in little sachets are great. If you like bat soap/solid shampoo, DM and Rossmann have absolutely loads to choose from - I gof solid conditioner and solid face cream as well. They have Catrice which is the grown-up sister to Essence.

Douglas is a good place to have a look in. When I was in Frankfurt there was a Sephora as well, but Douglas was way betterm
