Actually Honest - skincare and makeup reviews #4

I'm currently going through my makeup stuff - about ten years ago I had a phase where I was shopping a lot because I thought it was helping me deal with other things in my life, when all it actually brought me was getting into debt and a bunch of stuff that I couldn't use in one lifetime. And then Covid and WFH hit so I'm not wearing makeup in the same way I used to, as much as I think it might cheer me up to put it on if I'm not going anywhere? (Feel like I've suddenly started looking ancient in the past year, it's been a stressful one. Must not buy that apparent miracle in a bottle.)

So now I'm trying to strip it back and also remember that I have stuff that is waaaay past the expiry date....but it's also hard to get rid of as it feels like I'm literally throwing money away, I mean, have you seen how much even drugstore makeup is now? I did a big move a few months ago and still feel genuinely quite upset about the amount of stuff we had to just chuck out. I know some people find it liberating, but, maybe because of autism, I sort of anthropomorphise stuff and it makes it harder to get rid even if it's no longer of use to me.

Going to keep only the stuff I really love, force myself to get rid of the stuff that's too old (I mean...if you had a packet of biscuits with a best before date of 2020 you wouldn't eat them, would you?). It's also making me wonder what influencers do - seems you can return or even donate used cosmetics in the US, which would at least mean those giant PR packages go to good use. Not that I can donate stuff that's old anyway, but I doubt "a women's shelter" here would take an eyeshadow palette that's been used, for example?

TL:DR: I have way too much bleeping stuff.

It’s so easy to end up with too much stuff- when you consider how many ads, YouTube videos, social media posts and god knows what else we are subjected to daily. It feeds the feeling of needing stuff constantly. It’s incredible how much power it holds. The other week I saw an insta reel of a girl living in Paris and she had this gorgeous navy Sezane coat on. Now, I already have 3 coats- a puffer, a teddy coat and a wool leopard print one. But the Sezane coat was in my head. I can’t afford Sezane but it spurned a week long exhaustive search of affordable navy coats from every website I could think of, and a 5 hour stomp around London trying to find one comparable. I found one I liked but it was tight to do up. So, I walked away. All that energy and time spent because I saw an insta reel- and there’s nothing wrong with the coats I have anyway!!!

PS I saw something on Reddit the other day- if you save £27 a day you’d have £10,000 after a year. Now I can’t always save that much a day (a lot of us can’t) but it made me think about all the times I’ve spent £20 on makeup I don’t need etc. that money all adds up.

Influences normalise massive overconsumption and the joke is they get it all for bloody free.
It shouldn’t be normal to have a full make-up ‘kit’ with multiple palettes etc like an MUA but how many of us do?! New clothes and shoes for every occasion. Where did “airport outfits” even come from?! All these Halloween, Christmas, Easter, Autumn…different home decor options for any excuse and clothes just for a few days to celebrate a holiday season. And they only do it so they can aff link a new throw or cushions every few months because otherwise they’d run out of things to shill. It’s nuts but just so normalised now.

The bath salts in little sachets are great. If you like bat soap/solid shampoo, DM and Rossmann have absolutely loads to choose from - I gof solid conditioner and solid face cream as well. They have Catrice which is the grown-up sister to Essence.

Douglas is a good place to have a look in. When I was in Frankfurt there was a Sephora as well, but Douglas was way betterm
Love soap (ditched shower gel years ago as my tiny way to reduce the amount of plastic I’m going through) and have previously loved solid shampoo so will definitely be having a good old browse, thanks so much for this!

That's a really good point👏👏👏We might not be able to put £27 into the bank savings account each day but we can think twice about spending it
