2024 US Election #3

Hard agree. It’s easy to have 20/20 hindsight but ultimately getting endorsements from Taylor Swift/Beyonce/Cardi B is not gonna convince wavering voters to plump for Kamala. At best it’ll give already committed Dem supporters a warm fuzzy feeling. But it won’t cause floating voters to decide, and it won’t convert people who favour Trump. It’s actually pretty patronising to think that it would tbh. I mean I love Cardi B but I wouldn’t copy her political views just because it’s Cardi b. Does anyone normal do things because celebrities “tell” them to?

One of the many good things about UK politics is it still retains clear blue water between politics and celebrity. And when the two attempt to mix, it rarely works out. Russell Brand loudly endorsed Labour in 2015 and they still lost. Stormzy is 72 years old is 72 years old and Labour, likewise. And Eddie Izzard tried to stand for parliament and got his arse handed to him on a plate. Vorderman, most people just laugh at her I suspect. So, yeah. UK definitely has its head screwed on politically in this area.
I think Vorderman catches a lot of flack because she told everyone to vote for Labour but isn't really a Labourite herself. I quite like what she's doing

The guy that will be in charge of the borders:

Yikes.
Is immigration too tricky a topic for a thread? I guess it probably is but it’s such an almighty shitshow wherever you look these days I bet it’d make for a right old shindig.

It'll be a tit show as always, and some will complain about "crazy moderation" aka if there's opinions they don't like and other people will think they've got a right to be disruptive because they hold the correct opinion. 🙃

Social media bubbles and algorithms presenting a personalized feed causes so many distorted views of the world and expectations for everything to be tailored.

But most people here thesedays can agree to disagree respectfully and talk to others who hold different opinions.

Unpopular opinion but I'm not mad at Elon leading efficiency, there's a lot of fat to cut and it needs some megalomaniac that's run public companies. Great isn't an adjective I'd use and Manhattan project is an awful phrase to use. They partly dropped the nukes because so much had been spent and the public saw the project as an epic waste of money.

I remember when so many were going on that twitter would stop working in a few days after he sacked 90% of the staff and I said that was a load of crap. And of course it was.

So they reckon these two clowns will be able to cut huge swathes of the federal government within 18 months of getting into office? Bollocks 😆

I agree, although I think there’s going to be a lot more resistance and trap setting than what was at Twitter. Gov officials, if as corrupt as what we are told, will not go quietly.

“DOGE” tho. 😂

The only thing Musk is interested in, is cutting any police’s / services / departments that manage legislation, that stop him making more money. This isn’t about the Country, or the public at large, it’s about him. This is why the shares in companies owned by Musk, have rocketed since the election.
Enviromental, Safety, Tax etc .. that’s what he’ll go for.

And he is angry about his children, their genders, and disowning of him .. so he’ll be looking to limit heaith services, education etc

Twitter / X has is now worth less than 25% of what Musk paid for it … hardly a ringing endorsement. His removal of “blocking” shows he’s not interested in what Users want - it will be the same for govt.

it will be a tit show

Just saying but having billionaires like Musk having so much power in the government is what we call an oligarchy. Musk's companies receive huge subsidies by the government so how is that not a conflict of interests?

Also talking to run a government like a company is nonsense. The primary goal of a company is to make profits. A government is to serve its citizens. I don't say there are no current issues that need to tackled but I don't think that's the good direction. Javier Milei program have led to having more than the argentinian population under the poverty line and criminality is increasing. At least for Argentina something really needed to be done and it might on the long term help it to go out of the hellhole the country has been for decades. But why American citizens should go through so much pain when the US have none of the issues that have plagued Argentina for decades?

Also I don't believe cuts will be made in the military budget or the subsidies for farming. Subsidies that had to be increased after Trump's first round of tariffs. It destroyed the soybean production in the US as China retaliated. It killed american soybean exportations to China. If we are to believe Trump's promises on more tariffs more businesses might need federal help to survive this trade war - effectively leading to more state support.

Completely agree. Some of the most vocal critics of Trump 2.0 have admitted that their own financial portfolios are looking better than ever since Trump won the election. But they care more about the future of the US than making more and more money. Unlike Musk.

Apparently he has 12 children by three different mothers. Bojo, Trump, Musk. These narcs are all cut from the same cloth, eh?

I admit, I don’t know how much the US system parallels with our own civil service, and yes, there is no doubt a lot of fat that needs to be cut from ours, but when our government is busy doing nothing either because they are on very long summer breaks or, because they governing party is busy with infighting, or there is an extended break to parliament because a monarch has passed away, they have kept essential services like the prisons and schools running, largely as they did before these government “breaks”.

To simply say huge cuts will be made; with no strategy or action plan other than some of these areas are run badly/and or don’t have values which align with the current governments and need to go, seems very short sighted.

Yup, and anyone who says politics is so much better in terms of gender equality these days, I ask the question, if a woman had children by many different fathers, would they even make it to the nomination stage for leader in either the US or the UK?

Exactly! They would be laughed out of the room, I suspect.

My overall takeaway from the election is that a lot of Americans wanted to vote for lawlessness and that’s what they’re going to get and they realise that. Turbulent time ahead…

Oh it'd be thrown at them instantly.

Remember the leadership contest where they kept saying Theresa May wouldn't be a good PM because she hasn't got children?

I won't be surprised if he makes the Purge a real thing.
