West End Gossip #3

1
another bit of tea …. MJ is now papering in the west end. Soon to be on its last legs. Not selling well at all.
I’ve always struggled with this. I think MJs music can be celebrated, I’m attempting here to separate the artist from his work, in the same way as I still enjoy a Harry Potter film or in the same way Matilda is still in the West End despite Dahl being problematic.

But the MJ musical appears to celebrate the man itself. Which doesn’t sit right with me.

Ha, you must have been at the same performance we were. Me and my sister also had the issue that we couldn't understand what was going on a lot of the time, compounded by the fact that neither of us knew anything about the founding fathers beforehand (although might take your tip and find it on Disney if we can - I'm up for a second viewing).

Otherwise - some very talented performers, with standouts being Nathania Ong and Joel Montague (nailed the petulance and foppery very well in a humorous way like you said). There was also an insanely hard working band/music master (I was up in the Gods and there was a chap on a keyboard under the stage in a gap between the lights at the front performing most, if not all of the music, as well as cueing and keeping time for the cast on a little screen visible from the stage) who also deserves a mention!
Ah that’s funny! We were in the rear of the stalls. I think the musicians in Hamilton are incredible. It’s full on. Other musicals they get a break when there’s speech but apart from a few lines it’s relentless music. Huge kudos to them, I think the guy you mention is probably the Musical Director. Such talent.

i really enjoyed sunset on the west end but i worried about how this number would work on broadway for this exact reason 🫣

I'm actually with the general public on this.

While you shouldn't actively try and ruin the performance and walk. It's a public right of way and that area gets ridiculously busy as it is. The show doesn't have more of a 'right' than anyone else and I'd be pissed off too being pushed out the way. Especially as most people won't be aware of what's going on so there's a 'wtf are you shoving me' element.

same! that’s honestly a crazy place to try and do it, like you say it’s ridiculously busy (in london the route was at least much less congested) and it’s going to be full of tourists who won’t know what’s going on until they’re being shoved out of the way, and there’s absolutely no need to push them like that either.

i get it’s a big moment of the show but i think they probably should have adapted it. watching that just makes me think it’s a matter of time before it goes wrong!

iI have to feel for tom Francis here because TBH Times Square is straight from Satans bumhole at the best of times. The absolute worse place I have ever been on the planet and even that was by accident. I'm waiting for someone to try n pick his pocket or one of the Elmos go mad because you filmed n didnt pay.

They obviously got pressured into committing to the bit cos of all the publicity and while It worked well enough at the Oliviers. choosing to still do this in Times Square is absolute insanity. I saw someone comment onine before it opened as to other things they could have done with this outdoor section including i think there's some theatres connected either behind or across the street that might have been a wiser idea

Pretty sure that the person being shoved out of the way isn’t a New Yorker, she has the look and attitude of a small town tourist. I saw a clip from another angle and she looks like she’s being deliberately provocative whereas most locals who are used to filming and all sorts of things going on in the streets would just walk by and keep to the side. Whilst it’s true that there will be more people around than in London as the alley is a short-cut to Juniors restaurant (see below photo for the actual route as it doesn’t actually go into Times Square), I think it is perfectly doable but the minders will have to be a bit bolshier to cope with the general cluelessness of a lot of people who can’t cope with the normal hustle and bustle of the city. I would however like to see them try and do it for a matinee during the Broadway flea market as the crowds this year were ridiculous.

I saw reports on one of the theatre sites that one day it clashed with a nearby theatre getting out. I think timing is even more crucial in NYC than in London.

I stayed by juniors and the alley and it can be quiet or chaotic and like you day, the flea market will be madness

To note though a good pojnt.. I think the flea market has already taken place and that in itself was problematic due to over crowding, the stupid idea to only use one side of the street and apparently a whole heap of perverts rubbing and touching ppl inappripriately

Sidebar you stayed in the area? HTF did you sleep?!!!!!

Also just noticed its at the St James.. I've been onstage there proud to say.. have to say if he;d burst in through the doors next to where I was sitting at Spamalot and kicked my very expensive themed cocktail over there;d be likelihood fight indoors too..(spiritual New Yorker here)
