Anything recommended by Marion Keyes i avoid.

It's so unfair, they're all just mates and their recommendations mean nothing. It's why I only read Goodreads reviews.

Also Mel Giedroyc's book was painful, I couldn't finish it.
Reading between the lines of the review, Sturart H agreed with you on Mel. I did wonder if the whole article was a piss take. A well known columnist / borderline lit luvvie reviewing celeb writers books which are covered in lit luvvie quotes. He gives them a positive review while not really saying anything positive about them except that other people like them/ they’ve sold a lot.

I find Richard osman’s books really painful to read and can imagine Mel’s is hard work. Both Mel and Dawn O have a touch of the kooky girl or yesteryear.

I loved bob mortimer’s autobiography. It was really touching and well written and was contemplating buying his book but Stuart didn’t sell it

I tried reading a coupon of dawn o porter’s books and couldn’t get into them. I don’t know why she’s so popular.

Some literary tea:
As shared in the Jack Monroe threads - Martin Amis is an absolute cockwomble. I used to have an office in the same building as him and he was always slamming doors in people's faces and lighting up fags indoors. Phenomenally rude and unpleasant.

Peter James is awfully, awfully posh. I was surprised because of how his novels are normally very gritty. He's incredibly nice though, very polite and chatty and interested in what others have to say. He is also extremely short and has bad posture which makes him look even tinier.

Annoyingly I have to block out his picture but he’s a middle age man with a teeny amount of followers- yep mate I’m sure Lorraine Candy ex editor of Elle and the Sunday Times style mag has heard of the Sunday Times Style mag and Vogue 😂

Lorraine Candy’s a bit of an LL too. She may be more well known on the fashion scene- she’s edited top mags- but seems to really love doing opinion pieces on herself for anywhere that will take her like them all 😆

These writers with newsletters really highlights the importance of editors! Pandora's first paragraph today:

Thank you so much to the almost 10,000 of you who have signed up to Books + Bits! I feel a little like I’m 22 again, updating my Wordpress while supping on a Starbucks latte, but discomfiting retro feelings aside, it’s a joy to have this space to share all my reccs with you all.

Supping’s a word tbh but it’s pretentious af. This is poor writing and shows she’s heavily edited :) Starbucks latte cringe

Infuriating, all of it! Only this morning, in utter financial panic attack aka every modern woman everywhere in 2023, I did the math: I need x amount per annum, if I persuaded x amount of people to part with a $20 newsletter subscription A YEAR, I would need a low four-figure subscriber base. It was simultaneously revelatory and heartbreaking. 10K Panda, really?

Re Lorraine Candy ref above: I once wrote a personal essay about getting sober with the inadvertent assistance of millennial podcaster women like Pandora /Dolly et al (am in older age bracket, obvs) and THE ONLY person I sent it to was Lorraine Candy. Go big or go home! (No wonder I've yet to attain Panda-level financial security, haha)

Do you have to pay for her newsletter???

Dolly has issues with alcohol I think. She always tries to make a joke out of it

Another rando that discovered this thread after a bout of insomnia (also not a creepy poster who has been hitting like on many old posts!). Definitely not London based but became quite fascinated with Ella friend of Caroline (forgotten her surname) when she was writing about caring for her partner diagnosed with cancer. She had a beauty/make up column in The Pool that I remember being quite fond of. Looking back on it now, I wonder if it was a bit icky writing about lipstick and your partner's latest reaction chemo.
