Twitter - Elon Musk takes control and renames X

Makes it seem like twitter really isn't going anywhere when people are spending their time saying how they won't use twitter and how bad it is.

If it was indifference it would be a different story.

As if the facebook clone will be any different if it gets any significant market share. Because facebook is such an unproblematic space.

I've lost count of the number of "celebs" who have threatened to leave twitter and years later they're still there. They all think that people actually care - they have massively inflated egos.
Similarly tons of them have said they'll move to Canada and yet...

It's the most tedious thing ever.

People not getting their way 100% of the time flouncing. The expectations and entitlement has got so much worse with social media algorithms.

It's literally a rule on tattle because it's disruptive to announce on thread you're going (usually after some stupid reason like posts totally offtopic about trans being deleted on the zoella thread), although that's very different to announcing it on your own social feed.

The path to buying Twitter might have started as foot-in-mouth but once the opportunity was spotted and/or forced, it's proven highly useful and it will be interesting to see if he takes the hat of Minister for Information and be nominally loyal or if he will be 'suggesting' policy outside of his shared brief at the not-a-real-department that he's pretending is official...

He definitely wants a return on his investment

Not the most exciting title, but someone did a summary thread with the graphs

As for bluesky, I suspect most users (even the flouncers) will have accounts on both instead of 'moving' as such, and we'll have to wait a bit to see who's posting on which one though given the amount of ground to gain to even come close, it may well be something of a minority sport.

He's pretty much got one of the most powerful jobs in the world from his 9% personal investment in twitter.

He knew about that press announcement with DOGE and he probably made billions from that coin alone in an hour and stands to make billions more.

He's got a huge return on his 4 billion investment even if twitter never gets back to the value it once was.

Believe it or not, the only celeb I have ever known to have announced they were leaving Twitter and actually stuck to it is professional social media gobshite Jameela Jamil, who said she wasn’t going to post on Twitter any more since it was announced the deal was finalised and Elon Musk was taking it over, and she hasn’t.

If people wish to, fine, but it’s embarrassing when people proclaim all these grand gestures, similar to American celebs back in 2016 “I will LEAVE America if Donald Trump gets in” but didn’t and probably won’t this time either.

I'm cringing for the turboknobs that are changing their Twitter profile names to something like "<my name> NOW ON BLUE SKY" while still posting profusely on Twitter

It is embarrassing and a both sides thing that needs to stop. Even Trump himself said he might leave the US if Biden won in 2020...yet here we are four years later and he is still here.

Think is, Twitter/X is used by so many companies and public bodies and celebs and their followings supposedly built over time. Going over to Blusky means starting their social media reach all over again. I have created an account on Blusky out of curiosity (I only really have X to follow some people anyway, I don't post), but it looks like a clone of X. At the moment people on Blusky are like 'oh this place is good and calm and precious ' but we all know that eventually it will become a cesspit too, as all social media does. It may eventually drain more people away from X if people stick to it, but if these people are still posting on X then it's just a performative duplication, people with a foot in both camps. Time will tell, I guess. I do think Elon will continue to make himself unpopular so X may very well disappear. But Blusky will need to work hard to keep people and their user experience will need to hold muster. Eventually there will be bots and spam and stuff there too. Same shhhh different shovel. Instagram used to be a place for sharing photos. Now look at it, it's a platform for influencers.

And don't get me started on Threads, when ever I check it all I ever see if people moaning and griping. And that was supposed to be a nicer alternative to X 🙄

If you can't cope with reading stupid stuff or stupid opinions you shouldn't be going on social media. There's a lot of nutters in the world and they're going to post on sm. Just roll your eyes and move on. Obviously I think anything racist or anything inciting violence should be removed but I also think people need to be able to say to themselves that this person is not my type of person and move on. Everyone is not going to agree all the time.
People threatening to leave the country are ridiculous - nobody cares outside of your immediate family and friends.

Which does in itself raise the question of returns on investment for the other 91%, whether the IOU is still in the same hands, who's going to be collecting and whether that's money or favours and a seat at the table...

For me it's not what the posts are saying so much as the ever-increasing volume of crap you have to scroll past in the 'for you' list though the lesson there I should have learnt was when you see a tweet from someone you've never heard of saying something vague but somehow got 20 million views... leave it!
One click on one of those and suddenly it's swamped with crap from Farage and Robinson and that Sweden bloke and a mass of same-themed posts though I've found that instead of blocking, doing 'not interested' and then 'see fewer posts from' has a much wider effect than just blocking a single account.

And also what is obviously targeted things, especially far right content

You don't have to scroll through the for you page though. You can just stick to the "following" page and only see accounts that you have chosen to follow.

Preferring to stay off that particular terminology, I'll go with what I would argue is more generally accurate, 'tit stirrers'.

True but once tuned to reduce the obnoxious crap it can be informative as to what people are saying/thinking that is outside of my 'preference bubble' that stems from a deliberately restrictive following-list.

This exactly, move on and don't waste time on it.

I know people say that about tattle, but I'm not annoyed by these influencers - it's like watching gold reality TV with how they tie themselves up selling crap.

I'm hearing a lot that Elon has made twitter push his views and far right stuff but has there been a detailed investigation that's looked into this?

I wipe my social media accounts every so often and start again with the algorithm. My current twitter is pushing cute animal videos. I'm not sure if there is a programmed bais or if it's just pushing stuff that people get a strong reaction to.
