There's a famous case in the 1988 Olympics when Greg Louganis hit his head on the diving board.

Yikes

Does anywhere know where I can watch the gymnastics medal cermony? I was recording on eurosport and it seems they didn't show it.

Simone biles must have the most intense pressure on her shoulders, her reputation, the expectation, I know that’s what comes with being at the top for your sport but sometimes the day just doesn’t pan out well for you and that’s that. Hope that she is ok whatever has gone on.
I do feel sorry for her because she’s very visible and the poster girl for gymnastics, especially in America. Lots of comments on social media are very mean to her. I think not having a crowd there really does impact the athletes, especially when they are struggling. Hearing people cheer for you can boost you mentally and physically.

She was really awkward in the bbc interview when asked directly if she was going to carry on competing. I don’t know why she’s still doing interviews take her away.

Does the back up team USA gymnast who covered for Simone still get a medal?

A part of me feels sympathetic but also I still cannot help but see her as unprofessional in the situation. She really should have pulled out (or been pulled out) before the start of the event at the latest. It’s an utterly selfish move

I read that team GB don’t have a football team competing as they don’t want to mix national teams in other competitions. Could they not say have an all English team one olympics, next Olympics all Welsh and then Scottish the next. Hopefully next time they’ll have one anyway as I think some other sport is having a mix team.

we have a women’s GB team though 🙌🏼

Whilst I totally agree with this, I do, it must be crazy pressure- would she not have felt like this aswell at home in Training and also surely she wouldn't want the last 4 years to be a complete waste of time? I really hope she recovers and she comes back for the other events and do what she's clearly able to do and just go for it!!

Tbh I think the opposite. She recognised she wasn’t in the right frame of mind to continue and thus wouldn’t perform well. If she believed her teammates would do better than her, immediately removing herself as opposed to muddling on to a second apparatus was the right thing to do for the team. It’s not like she left them with no talent to fill in 🤷🏻‍♀️

Nobody would call a footballer selfish for needing to be subbed off and just because she wasn’t physically injured, it doesn’t mean her mental health isn’t just as important.

But that's the right decision at the time definitely, she could really hurt herself. But surely she was already feeling like this enough to know that it would actually mess up her routines?

Simone Biles has now said she wasn't hurt, but had suffered "just a little injury to my pride".

So is she insinuating that she felt her vault was so sub-standard (for her) that she just couldn't carry on in the competition? That if the vault was good, she would've been fine to carry on? That's a real issue for her coaches. Has she been built up so much that she is missing the mental fortitude to deal with lacklustre performances?

I feel for her teammates. They made the best out of a difficult situation.

They could have had gold has that other girl not had a slight fall on floor! She clearly knew that if she wasn’t okay the girls would be. I’m sure she will speak about what really happened when she retires. I reckon she’ll do a lot more politically/socially active things. The coaches scandal was just the start

Sad Simone pulled out. I’m just catching up now! I wanted to see her perform. I hope it wasn’t just a case of hurt pride… I know she has a lot of pressure on her, but you can’t be perfect all the time.
I think it’s worse, competing after you’ve won so many medals as everyone is expecting something! It’s better if you’re an unknown and win, like that swimmer the other day!

I wish I was seeing more of the British girls competing?!

I find the bbc coverage really confusing… off the top of your heads, does anyone know if men’s swimming (butterfly) has been on today??

100% agree with this. I think it takes a lot of maturity to go, y’know what, I am not at my best today and my team would have a better chance without me. I think there isn’t really another athlete out there at this time that has the same amount of pressure being put on to them by not just their team and their country but the entire world. She’s human just like everyone else. She has five final events still to go, and she knows the team could still medal without her so removing herself from the equation was the right choice in this situation.

It must be difficult when you are so used to winning, and everyone is telling you that you are going to win. Anything you do that is seen as being out of form must be very disheartening, but if she felt like that already it's sad that it had to hamper the other girls in the team event. I understand the mental pressure but they all have that, and the poor Chinese gymnast face-planted off the bars, so to me it does have shades of spitting the dummy, but she wouldn't be the first. Nobody likes to perform badly when big things are expected. As she said herself, it must hurt your pride to have an unexpectedly poor vault.

As much as I love him, I've always believed Usain Bolt deliberately false-started in the 100m final in the Daegu World Championships because he knew he was out of form and Blake would beat him and didn't want to face defeat.

This is a really great article talking about the mental challenges of this level of gymnastics - https://www.insidegymnastics.com/news-features/thelayeroffear72721-2-2/

I coach cheerleading, and I don’t know if that means I understand Simone more here, but I’ve coached athletes with tumble blocks where they’ve previously been injured, or have messed up pretty badly, during a tumble and they just can’t get past that fear to try it again. I’ve spotted kids for back handsprings that can do it fine, but they NEED me to be standing there with a hand on their back or they just won’t try. And the fear only gets worse the older you get. If she’s doubting her ability to perform those skills then not only is she running the risk of letting her team down then she’s also running the risk of doing herself a pretty serious injury. It may have seemed dramatic looking in from the outside, but she made the right call.
