This Is Going To Hurt - BBC

I couldn’t see a thread for this so apologies if one has started already!

Has anyone watched the first episode yet? What did you think? And have you also read the book?

I worked on maternity for a bit and I feel this is probably one of the most realistic insights into the NHS I’ve seen in a long time.

I devoured the audibook and absolutely loved it.
I knew a show was coming but completely forgot so it's a nice surprise it's out so soon. I'm going to binge it at the right time I think

I know! I saw it on catch up on Sky this morning, and managed to catch an episode whilst the baby napped. I think I’ll binge it with my husband - so happy to find it as we had ran out of things to watch 🤣

Would you recommend the audiobook? Did Adam Kay himself narrate it or was it someone else?

Loved the book - one of the best things I’ve ever read. I generally love anything Adam Kay does. I watched the first 3 episodes on Iplayer and it’s definitely the most realistic portrayal of working in the NHS that I’ve seen and I loved the attention to detail with the clinical scenes and terminology. However.. I wasn’t overly keen on how he’s been adapted on screen. He comes across as rude, arrogant at times and very dismissive of those around him, whereas in the book and interviews he’s much warmer and you can clearly see he cared but was just burnt out by the system. I’m enjoying it but think I just had such high expectations to start with!

Loved every episode of this. Witty and funny at times but also had me in bits sobbing nearly every episode. Some parts I don’t remember from the book so I think it’s been changed and on the whole it feels darker.

I know it’s based in the early 2000s and I so so hope things are better for our nhs drs and nurses now, but I’m doubtful😞 how anyone can work those sorts of hours and deal with that much pressure is beyond me..

It’s worse than 2000s. I work in obstetrics, qualified in 2014 and I’ve noticed a shocking difference in a decline since then. The staffing crisis is at a whole other level. I really enjoyed the books and the first episode though.

Loved the book and am loving the series. Don’t want to watch it too quickly though. Equally funny and sad, it’s making my OH laugh which rarely happens! The pressure our doctors and nurses are under is INSANE 🤯

I read the book a few years back on holiday and it was bloody brilliant! I’m now on the last episode on I player and think it’s equally as good! Usually I find books to be much better then the actual programme/film but i think they’ve done a really good job of the series! I’ve laughed and cried through out x
