The Michalaks #4 Claiming sobriety, what were they thinking? It’s not semantics when they’re still drinking

To be fair, weather looks pretty good right now, up to 20 degrees and sunny. Depending where they are headed might be a bit of rain. That said it was 16 degrees this afternoon where I am (sw UK) so not much cooler (not so sunny though).
I think the everything being closed/quieter might be more of a culture shock for them.

It can be ok but it’s not constant, and when it’s bad for weeks on end, there is no indoor facilities outside of the cities. No good soft plays etc … I knew a family that moved back to UK for Portugal for that reason… the winters can be hard. You need a place with good year round culture.

I moved to the Costa de la Luz in Spain. The winter is definitely warmer but as has been mentioned before the houses largely are built to keep cool in the summer so only have air conditioning with a heat setting for warmth in the winter, or a fireplace. I love it here, but the bureaucracy is 10000x more complex and frustrating than in the UK 😆 you can't get much done online and have to go in person to a notary/lawyer/police/town council to get anything done, even for things like buying a car or registering your address. I don't know how similar it is in Portugal but I can see Stefan getting a fright 😂

ahahhah I am Spanish (but live in the UK) so your reference to Spanish bureaucracy made me laugh... it is terrible there!

Many years ago, I used to watch Brits who had moved abroad and had bought property but, due to the language barriers, they came back to the UK with nothing......they had been swindled out of both their cash and property. I can't remember what the series was called but, I'm sure it was on channel 5

New vlog out. Can’t bring myself to watch it in case it’s all just clickbait again
I skipped through it. It's basically an undisclosed ad for some camera. It's impossible to watch, because 90% of it is Stef bitching and moaning about anything and everything. If he had a regular job, he would be the asshole colleague everyone hates. He can't say two non-bitching things in a row to save his life. They look at a house that is not perfect but costs as much as they would be willing and able to spend. They think the area is too touristy.

I got 2 minutes into their vlog and have switched it off! The entitlement  ......Both moaning that the house doesn't have two separate office spaces........for what???????? He spends his time dicking around with cameras and loving the sound of his own voice.....Maybe I can understand Hannah wanting to lock herself away from Stef. Do they realise they've promised to home school both boys??? They just need a big dining room table. They're going to need it for chemistry experiments for the boy's education. They won't have time for fannying around with vanity projects......

They are going into this the same way they live jow. The house isn’t good enough so going to spend money on it, they will be in debt again. Thought it was all about simple living.
This is 100% why even if they go to Portugal they will still be unhappy and unfulfilled. It's not about the UK and how bad they think it is, it's them and their mindset. Moved out of London as they were "priced out" and angry about it, now they want to move out of Bath/UK as they (Steff) is angry about something. To be honest I think if it was just Hannah she'd be staying here, and probably in Bath as I think she actually likes it there and the vibe fits her vision of herself.

It's crazy. They haven't sorted anything out regarding their move and Hannahs focus is finding someone in Algarve to do limewash.
Do you think they have exchanged contracts with the completion early January, that’s why they were able to go over and put the deposit down? They are lazy fuckers, they will just get a company in to pack for them and swan off. Probably leaving the house filthy.

Have they actually bought a place then? Didn't they have/had a reno page for their current house? Despite not doing anything themselves, just a vehicle to try and get freebies/discounts in turn for coverage. Doubt that's going to work in Portugal.

I’m assuming so 🤷‍♀️ the request for decorators and them doing a quick visit over there. They were only waiting to get the rent ground thing sorted for the exchange to go ahead by the sounds of it. They may say in the vlog tomorrow.

I’ve watched a few couples who have gutted and completely renovated farmhouses out in Portugal. They didn’t get freebies. They just managed to get the odd sponsor for vlogs

They make me chuckle with the we are buying a crumbling villa….a bit like the ‘don’t worry, we will make it nice’ 835k house in Bath that was lovely before they wrecked it. ItWill no doubt need a bit of work but I’d be surprised if it’s as bad as they are making out.

And they did none of that work. They didn’t even paint IIRC. Buying a house that needs everything in a country where they don’t even speak the language seems like a terrible idea.

BTW I think they have *plenty* of money. Remember how they were priced out of London but then went on to rent a mansion in Bath, followed by buying a pricey home and then paying a crapload of money to change every surface? They have a history of crying poor and then proceeding to spend lots and lots.
