I get that they didn't have the internet like we do now but I don't believe them when they say they didn't know sex would be expected. Kendra went in not long after them and she said she always knew what was up and so did the other girls. Having said that it's very clear there was a lot of grooming and manipulation. But I'm sorry, no one is trying to be a girlfriend thinking sex isn't going to happen.

Makes me cringe to think they had to have sex with Hef while the other girlfriends stood round watching, in one book I read, I think it was the one by Izabella St James she said that they would be slating the one performing, she's not too complimentary about Holly's performance either. Anyone who is willing to do that in my eyes is out for what they can get and the lifestyle it brings, it's like total humiliation with your frenemies stood laughing at you. Also totally agree with you on the grooming and manipulation, it's shocking really to hear it in these times and not be horrified by a lot of it.

I just don't get how the families of the girls seemed to be okay with it.... not to mention the hosue just looks dirty

I could never understand why the families of the girls were so accepting of this either.
But if you look into it a little further :

Holly - Before her family moved to Oregon, she came from a small fishing village on an island off the coast of Alaska with less 1,400 people living there. The prospects of building a life/career there were slim. She moved to L.A and worked at Hooters to fund her tuition for college. Her family would not have had the means to support her. She was in credit card debt and she had nowhere to live so she asked Hef could she move in.

Bridget - got married young and was from a single parent family. Like Holly, she struggled to put herself through college financially.

Kendra - moved into the mansion at 19. Like Bridget, she came from divorced parents and her mother struggled to provide for Kendra and her brother. Kendra suffered from depression as a teenager and attempted suicide and had issues with self harming and drugs. At one stage she was addicted to crystal meth and cocaine. She was put into a psychiatric facility at 15.

Often, the families had no option but to accept and support their daughters. Their daughters living with a man in his 80's was an easier option for them when the alternative is homelessness, poverty, drugs etc.

It is sad that you would basically rather your daughter prostitute herself with a gross old man than attempt to use their degree for something
 
Also their families may have supported them, albeit reluctantly, rather than lose them. I’m not sure about all the girls, but Holly, Bridget, and Kendra were adults (yes Kendra was still a teenager at 19). Perhaps the families didn’t know about the use of quaaludes and other drugs, remember the girlfriends weren’t really allowed to be away from or stay away from the mansion, except in certain circumstances
