I’m not emotionally ready for Rafa to speak
These goodbyes the tournaments do are always awkward when the player doesn't even know if he's retiring or not. Apparently they wanted to give him a big send off but he rejected it. Again he said there's still a chance he'll be back.
I know in the qualifiers they gave a send off to Diego Schwartzman and Dominic Thiem who are both retiring although Diego won't be retiring until the Argentina Open in February next year whilst Dominic will be retiring at the end of the year with his last tournament being the Vienna Open in October. These goodbyes the tournaments do are always awkward when the player doesn't even know if he's retiring or not. Yes they did the big one for Andy didn’t they and he’s still going
As I said above at least Dominic and Diego have said that they are retiring as they have both officially announced it whereas Andy didn't actually officially announce it. So, I imagine that they will get a goodbye video from all the players when they play their last tournaments.Oh yeah in Australia and that was farcical. Poor Andy had to sit through a retirement video with goodbyes from all the players before he told the organisers he hasn't actually decided if he's retiring.
I wonder if Rafa will play Wimbledon
Paris 2024 will host the five traditional events (men's singles and doubles, women's singles and doubles, and mixed doubles), providing 172 quotas. The total number of athletes depends on how many players compete in more than one event.
Each NOC can qualify up to 12 athletes, six per gender, represented by up to four players (the best ranked within their country) in each of the singles draws, two entries in each of the doubles draws, and only one entry in mixed doubles.
Can he be entered for the doubles even if he has no ranking for doubles? There's only 1 Spanish double player in the top 100 for doubles.
Presuming two entries for the doubles means 2 teams of 2 for each drawn?
Rafa's set to play doubles with Alcaraz who will get direct entry into the doubles as a Top 10 player. Alcaraz can then team up with any player inside the top 300. Don't quote me on this, but I think that's how it works.
For singles, Rafa can use his protected ranking/exemptions. I'm pretty sure nobody will stop him playing if he wants to!
Part of me is saying that this year will be his last year on tour whilst another part of me thinks that this year won't be his last year on tour and that he will play until next year. If he plays as well as he did yesterday I don't think he will retire, but it depends on how fit he stays for the rest of the season IMO.It would be a shame if yesterday was the last time he was ever on Chatrier. I'm torn.
