I think Johannes is a wonderful man, amazing performer, incredible dancer, gets on well with his partners and a brilliant Strictly Pro.

But I don't think I'd actually miss Johannes if he left Strictly.

I’m the same. {whispers: I mostly find his choreo boring and instantly forgettable. The only bits I can remember are some guitar gubbins with Cake-Beg Cath and the hilarious Casualty-opener with Ellie}

Yep, love Johannes and I think he'll go onto big things as he so charismatic but I've never quite clicked with him as pro.

I think his personality and presence is his main selling point and often that overshadows the actual partnership and routines. This is why I liked him with Ellie the best as they matched each others energy and he seemed to have fun for once

I reckon with this film adaptation or his book happening, he might want to focus or that? Of course, the dream would be him taking over on ITT but that's not going to happen is it 😆

Yeah I never thought I’d get over Pasha, and then Vito appeared..

Who will they give the neurotic middle-aged ladies to now??

oh, I *adored* pasha! then he went and married rachel, ew 😕

I think we all know who the neurotic middle aged ladies (tbh, I'm starting to be one) should be given...

Yeah his choreography's never grabbed me either. I like him, but also find him a bit forgettable. I loved his partnership with Ellie. I liked his choreography the best that year too. I don't think he's ever really considered for any real contenders because they want the possibility of a showmance to be there with the young hot single girls, so I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted to leave. His chances of ever winning are very slim.

John was definitely a contender, if not for the Rose Phenomenon. I'm sure TPTB thought they might win.

True. I suppose John very likely would have won that year if not for Rose. I think it would have been pretty close between him and AJ. I meant more that I doubt he's ever had a serious shot at getting a female contender. Before and since John, he pretty much only gets nervy middle-aged ladies. There doesn't seem to be any push to get him a win in the same way they obviously kept giving pros like Kevin and Gio contenders until they won. Gorka too, though it hasn't worked yet. Nor has he ever really had a ringer, though John was the closest.

I don't want to say it's anyone behind the scenes being intentionally homophobic, but I think there is a bias towards wanting to not 'waste' someone who can generate 'will they won't they' headlines on an openly gay pro. And often the attractive young women are the best dancers (though not always of course, some have two left feet like Nikita and Zara) so gay pros have less chance of winning. I don't think Robin and Ian ever got close to a win either, and Matt Cutler wasn't out when he won with Alesha. Even if TPTB are gay too, I think the attitude is still there. Lots of actors have spoken about it often being gay casting directors and agents who tell them stuff like 'act more straight', 'don't come out' and pass them over for straight roles. Anyway, I think John was most likely his first and last shot at winning, so I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted to move on now he has other opportunities.

I'm sure there is some of that, although attractive young women generally don't win! Not unless they fit a very rigid 'girl-next-door' shaped box.

I think it's also that pros get pigeon-holed - it wasn't homophobia that saw Anton stuck with middle-aged ladies, but that he was seen as good with them (though that's debatable choreo-wise) and it seems lots of them asked for him. It was the same with Annabel - she asked for Johannes and it was made to seem like she would only have done it with him, so he became a victim of his own loveliness. Aljaz was a bit in that vein too, got pigeon-holed as 'lovely'. Not a problem some will have (Gio)!

TPTB love an are they/aren’t they, gets Strictly into the headlines and if they are lucky people will keep talking about it until the next series. Even ITV this time round are making use of Ellito.

Talking of Kai, is he still with Nadiya ? She is travelling with her daughter in Europe, ok they don't have to be joined at the hip, but as far as I can tell they're not 'liking' each others insta posts. They have a tour coming up soon don't they ? Hmm

Ian a managed second place with the fabulous Denise Lewis (only missing out to the juggernaut that was That Jive) and third with Zoe Ball who was crushed under the wheels of Len and his blokey blokey SPORTSMAN storyline/obsession (I remain convinced at that point the powers that be were getting twitchy there would never be a male winner and went full throttle).
He also did quite well with Jodie and Jade was just starting to find her groove when she had the injury.

I haven't seen the earlier seasons, and was going to have a look at how he placed on Wikipedia as I was writing that post, got distracted and forgot lol. It does seem he did better than I expected. However I think he wasn't openly gay at the time? Or at least was more low-key about it. I remember reading an old DS thread from around 2005/6 where someone mentioned he was gay and a lot of people were in disbelief, somehow. 😂

Did you not think Zoe was a contender? Or Denise

edited to add @Boring Monday got there first

They seem to go through phases. I’m sure once the holidays are over and the tour promo starts it’ll be back to normal. They are doing Donehays at the weekend.

I think Johannes choreography is neither amazing nor bad, he does enough to get by but none of his routines stick out to me. He is probably the most likeable pro, in a sense that although Gio and Dianne are popular, they can divide people and some people don’t like them. He definitely does overshadow his partners at time, but I think that’s just due to him being an excellent performer. I think some pros really enjoy the performance side of the show whilst others have more of a passion for teaching. I’ll miss his personality as I think he’s lovely, but not so much his choreo.
