Yeah, I get it: the show, judging from the production meeting shown, clearly wanted the opener to be 'like a stage musical' - ie busy, complicated, etc. I think Vito decided to make a virtue of that by showing off what Ellie could do (complicated partner work, looking natural doing all sorts of stagework) which the judges appreciated, but which goes down less well with the audience, who just want to see the couples flying round the floor. Viz Bobby's very competent QS - by virtue of it being just the two of them, him in tails, a good song, looks amazing.I didn't mind her dancing with the backing dancers, but I didn't particularly like all the lifts and skipping around a fountain stuff. To me, that's the sort of thing that belongs in a duffer's routine to make it more entertaining, and it's just a waste for one of the good ones to do that instead of more dance content.
Yet again, the motto is - let the pros choreograph and stop Jason etc deciding the themes and styles!
