He can't remember his mother can he, or just barely, and nobody would want children to grow up without their mother but this sob story stuff is basically a free pass into the next round and I find it unfair on the others. Also what did that song or dance have to do with her?

This isn’t really fair, one of my friends lost their mother around the same age, it affects you no matter how old you were
