I read it like that too, she maybe was. I wonder if maybe AJ was somewhat into him and that’s why he has made a distance between them since the end of the show, especially, since AJ did often like tweets “ shipping” them together and suggesting they should be a couple, which if he was beginning relations with nadiya would be inappropriate and he’s done what any decent bloke would do.

Speaking as someone who thought that there was chemistry between AJ and Kai, it was more their behaviour off the dancefloor that made me think that there might have been chemistry between them. Before you lot label me as a crazy shipper, I always said that things between AJ and Kai might not have been what we thought that they were. Unless the people involved confirm that there is a romance, I will never believe that there is 100% something going on.
Kai's comments kinda explains why it seems like maybe he and AJ don't talk anymore.

It just goes to show how differently things can be interpreted though- I never really saw anything in their off the dance floor behaviour that indicated that they had something different beyond the other last few couples- they were all quite touchy-feely, all complimented each other a lot and got emotional at particular moments (just an observation, not saying you’re a crazy shipper at all).
 
As someone who is quite cynical about any sort of hints at romance on Strictly, I did start to wonder about AJ and Kai, mostly because of their musicals week VT (where they made the whole thing about AJ's nephew wanting them to kiss - I did think, would they rope in a kid if there was nothing going on? Apparently, they would 😬)

Dealing with intrusive messages and shipping 24/7 must be draining and upsetting, but I do wonder if Kai was happy to go along with hinting at something, until he wasn't anymore

I do remember that- it was a bit much. A bit like AJ and Mollie, I always find those overt pushing a romance moments on strictly always make me think the opposite tbh.
If they did lean into showmance my guess would be because it was a ruthlessly competitive year where the top 4 would all be worthy winners, they were fighting two big ‘stories’ in John and Rose, and musicals came not long after Rose & Gio’s couple’s choice- they would’ve seen the buzz around that and them and maybe just thought playing into the rumours a little would give them extra visibility.
