Does anyone else think Strictly is behind the curve with not having had a drag contestant yet? DWTS Australia did it ages ago with Courtney Act and even DWTS USA has done it now, which is weird because they’re a far more conservative country than we are and not as tolerant of LGBT people. Once again Dancing on Ice (which is dire) has got the first in the UK! Drag Race is on the BBC ffs!

No. I don’t understand why drag has become the cause de jour that needs to be shoehorned into everything, even toddler story-time in libraries.

Putting drag performers into everything is a lazy shorthand for inclusivity. In what way is men parodying women (because that’s the usual trajectory; drag kings get next to no coverage) by means of grotesque caricature ‘inclusive’? Who is it making visible that was previously excluded?

Also, you might want to rethink lauding DOI for its ‘inclusivity’, given the presence of John Fashanu in this year’s cast ( for those who don’t know, he disowned his brother, Justin, when he came out as gay, and offered him £75,000 to keep his sexuality secret, saying “I gave him the money because I didn’t want the embarrassment for me or my family.” Justin Fashanu later killed himself.)

gosh poor molly. she didn’t deserve to be there in any way.

i said last night and will say again, that this has to be it for tony. i wonder if he’ll get backlash after this dance-off, as the others have all had a obvious person to go within it who isn’t him - but he can’t keep being saved over better dancers just because he’s trying his best. he was on the wrong foot for about 80% of his routine!

So I read somewhere that Katya doesn’t like Tony and finds him frustrating. That their relationship is strained. I don’t see it. But anyone read the same?

I don't think them talking in the background at the end and Tony looking like he was backchatting a ref helped. Not great them not waiting til they were backstage anyway but I bet they'll be mortified when they see it was caught on camera. Producers will have been plotting a rumba for next week when they saw that.

Ellie S's leaving speech- the reason the results show is not live 😅.

Hopefully they would forgive him any mistakes and let him have another go like they did Fleur. Then next week he can come on and say even though his dear dad has been dead for a number of years he still loves Strictly and he’s doing it for him.

But Will was much better than Ellie S?
Fleur did not perform the dance off twice, they delayed it because Vito fell off his chair before the dance even started. Do you just believe every headline you read without even looking at the article?

Regards the JF incident, it was different times and attitudes weren't the same as now. I remember the monkey chants, the banana throwing of the late 80s, to have a openly gay brother just led to more chanting and vitriol - (even from his own supporters). I've seen programmes and read articles where John has since shown remorse, but him offering money wasn't why Justin took his own life.

I missed the arguing live but watched a clip just now.
I quite like seeing stuff like that - shows how much they care and it isn't all gloss and smiles. Katya is maybe frustrated with Tony playing up to the 'joke' act when she knows they both work hard and he is capable of better. Fair play to her having such exacting standards and ambition and never 'settling' like Anton often did with his partners.

Yes and no.

Yes in the sense that there’s been drag queens on international versions. But no in the sense that Courtney was already known to Australian audiences before drag race from x-factor/Australian idol and shangela has done quite a bit of acting. None of the UK contestants have done anything mainstream aside from the odd few doing random appearances on stuff like celebrity pointless etc

I don’t think DRUK or RPDRusa are as popular as they were either I see more people say they’ve stopped watching and that the franchise needs a rest than people actually hyped for new series. There’s also starting to be a bit more of a pushback because drag is everywhere these days and a lot of women particularly don’t like it because of the super hyper sexualised imagery.

Then there’s the issue where several of the potential candidates are basically professional dancers anyway and the ones who wouldn’t be able to handle criticism from the judges and general public. I personally think it would an all round car crash with the wrong contestant.

but him offering money wasn't why Justin took his own life.

I didn’t say that being offered the money from John was the direct cause of Justin killing himself. I mentioned the money to demonstrate the extent of the homophobia Justin suffered, including explicitly from his own family.

Classing it as ‘an incident’ that was ‘of the time’ is an exercise in minimisation. John disowned Justin, called him an ‘outcast’, and claimed Justin was only pretending to be gay for attention. That’s a sustained rejection, not an incident.

Katya looked absolutely shattered at the end.

It must be hard to choreograph a cheerful, memorable routine and patiently train her sweet but very ungainly partner in it for eight/nine hours every day during the week, probably getting bonked on the head or kicked in the shin a fair few times every hour.

Eventually, maybe, he can do the dance on the Saturday with around 80% accuracy and she has talked him into having a bit of confidence in himself, over the course of several hours, probably feeling a bit like a drill sergeant crossed with a nanny. And she has hope that this time the dance will go smoothly.

And then she goes on the show and the poor chap completely forgets which foot is which, messes up the lifts and the judges basically honk laughter in her face.

Repeat every Saturday for seven weeks on the trot now (except last week). No wonder she looks a little done in.

Maybe next week she should stop the mad lifts, and just do a nice sedate waltz, very calm, very minimalist, to soothe her own frayed nerves and give Tony a break from the perpetual terror of tossing her about like he's making a pancake.
Agree on the last part. If you’re partner isn’t up to the standard im not sure why you would throw in loads of hard lifts. Simple is sometimes more effective. I would proper trim it down and work on his technique they might get taken seriously a bit more.
Also didn’t think helen was worth a 10!!!

I genuinely think I am a lone dissenter here, but I loathe drag with a passion so not seeing a drag contestant on SCD is no hardship for me.

No offence to any contributors here who are drag artistes or those that enjoy it. Just not for me.:)
You're not alone, I don't really have any interest in it either, don't see the appeal at all. You couldn't pay me to watch RuPaul's Drag Race, but that said, I've still enjoyed the drag queen contestants that have been on DWTS, because they danced well and had a great partnership with their pros.

Wow!! Desperate for this to happen just for the meltdown!

Love this line: " 'Although Kai is still only in his 20s he’s always acted much older than he is and feels ready to settle down"
Well, yes: we've established he's a 40-year-old accountant named Derek (or maybe Stuart)!

I am sure the AT folk will be clucking about how it's too soon and it'll end in tears, whereas in their narrative Derek and AJ would be married with 17 babies by now.

But that’s not the vibe I picked up from Jayde, I think she thought she’d go further and you’re probably right - there may well have been another thing attached to her CC.

(I should say, I am not averse to hearing about losses or struggles in life - far from it. I just don’t want to be manipulated. Maybe a Couple’s Choice week at the halfway point would work? Make it an even playing field)
This weekend wouldve been her sisters 40th birthday (the family were having a celebration for it) so her CC would’ve 10000% been about her again. I have no doubt. I think that’ll be why it was scheduled for this weekend. TPTB obv thought she’d be much better than she was

Katya was incredibly frustrated because Tony apparently had performed the dance perfectly in training and fluffed it in the night. When they finished you could see she wanted to scream.
I may be wrong but I don’t think they dislike each other; I just think she’s had an incredibly difficult and challenging job on her hands. Plus I’m sure Tony will be a personality who isn’t used to taking orders!
Katya has really won me over; I wasn’t sure if I liked her, but I now think she’s a brilliant, positive force of energy.
