I was surprised that AJ didn't get more hate - for the record I found her voice a bit annoying! But Kai was immediately popular and tbf he did great routines iwth her + showmance. I also think Irish DWTS, although lower-budget is closer to the ethos of SCD than Ballando (walking wounded + snogging + wafting round for hours!)

Re Vito's teaching, which has been critiqued a lot on DS, it's hard to know as in the VTs he always appears to be saying the right thing - ie this week he was saying 'keep your shoulders down and spine up' or whatever), but there must be more to it than that, in terms of finding the way to get your celeb to really internalise what they need to do. I'm just not looking forward to a year of DS slagging him off (before he gets 'redeemed' a la Graz)

i think AJ didn’t receive a lot of the backlash as she isn’t a performer and they hammered home how she couldn’t dance. There’s this expectation that a performer will find it easy to knock out a Viennese waltz and it’s somehow “cheating”

I seem to remember Graziano was hopeless his first year with Vick Hope (ironically). She had such potential and his choreography was constantly off the mark. Leaving her standing while he danced and wafted around her.
I was surprised they brought him back after that, but am glad they did.

Yeah, I know everyone blamed her partly as apparently she didn't put in any effort. I don't think Vito has been on that level, but definitely he needs to get a better idea about what goes down well with SCD viewers. I also think Carlos hasn't been perfect either - especially when compared with Kai and Nikita last year - but that both of them have enough good qualities to give it a better go next year.
 
Aside from the showmance and the fact she wasn’t a dancer, AJ has a great personality and comes across as more relatable and less media trained than Fleur. She was also a better dancer imo, in strictly terms anyway. She was elegant and light on her feet and had a couple of really memorable routines - her jive in week one was phenomenal.

I think it’s a combination of things with Fleur and she’s just not connecting unfortunately.

exactly!

a female celeb has to be: good but not know how good she is. sweet but not sickly. humble but not overly humble because that seems fake. nice but not too nice because that seems fake. confident but not too confident because that seems arrogant. love her family but not mention them too much because ew trying to manipulate us.

a male celeb has to be: fun and good vibes, bless him, look at his little face etc.

:D Spot on. I saw people on Twitter complaining about Fleur's birthday being mentioned as that was 'manipulative'.

Rose had the lot, really! Plus showmance with long-time runner-up and popular pro!

I think Strictly is a very strange beast of a thing. Even though Vito comes from an international version, trying to understand the sensibilities of the British viewing public must take some getting used to (and someone like Kai grew up with Strictly so had a huge head start in that respect)

And the batshit scoring of the judges probably doesn't help either - if anyone were to take them at face value, you wouldn't have a clue what the hell they liked or were looking for in a dance

omg i’ll add that to the list 🤣 “not have a birthday during the show because manipulating us”

rose was lightning in a bottle really. great combo with a popular pro, had almost every aspect that the audience enjoys in a female dancer.

now that i’ve written all that i genuinely am shocked that both kara and jill won. kara did have a lovely thing going with artem though so i wonder how much that helped (it seems so long ago that i can’t remember! i only remember them kissing when she won and being shook)

I think in order to win they can't be too sexy and, ironically, not be the best dancer. Basically they have to be an underdog with a goofy personality I.e Stacy Dooley.
I think Ellie T would fit this category if she had a few more memorable routines.
The only exception I can think of is Kara Tointon 🤷🏻‍♀️

that’s a great point. a goofy sort of “look at me! i can’t believe i’m doing this! dancing!” thing seems to work - i see no other way stacey won after that godawful showdance 🤣

kara is definitely the exception. as said i above, i do wonder how much the genuine romance and build of it with her and artem got the audience to love them. their rhumba is still an absolute moment for me because you could tell how connected they were.

I wonder if it has got worse with social media? Jill was a trained dancer, but maybe that was less discussed? also her and Kara both have girl-next-door qalities, I think, as did Caroline (RIP).

Ridiculous! Did they say the same about Ellie T yesterday or Tony a few weeks ago? Course not!

And there was nothing more manipulative than last year. I had to skip some of the Rose Giovanni stuff cause of the gushing about how lovey they were while theres a bts video of him calling her a stupid cow when he thought she couldn't hear him.
