On DS they say that Graziano is crap at ballroom and therefore should never get a good partner. I confess I can't remember his ballroom at all!

I know Dan annoyed a lot of people but folk would be hard pushed to dispute that he was improving as the weeks went on, and some people do like a journey.

How do you get involved and vote if the contestants are all equally as good? They’d be as well have a programme of professional dances imo.

The thing is, AJ with no experience, could have been an absolute duffer on paper and Kai may have been given her to ease him into Strictly. They soon found out he is a miracle worker!
So it isn’t as easy to predict really - Anneka ‘should’ have been good, with all her fitness.
 
I have been avoiding this thread as I hadn’t seen the show, thought Fred was great, wonder if Diane’s head has been turned talking about how charismatic he was?
considering moira Stuart says she has danced all her life, she was a bit pedestrian.

I thought Karen was injured? Or was the opening dance filmed weeks ago?

The posters that are ballroom dancers have been really shocked at his standard of ballroom especially with Vicki many thought she out danced him and she wasn't that good herself. I suspect he's been brushing up on those skills these past couple of years.

I am pretty sure they would have a good idea that she would be decent, although how good was probably a pleasant surprise, from just looking at some of her instagram posts dancing it's obvious she had natural rhythm and her level of fitness really helped too.

In the past they have often done chemistry/ability tests with the pros and celebs especially a new Pro, although Kai's time on DWTS means he was well experienced compared to most new pros.
They didn't mention doing anything like that this year but I strongly suspect it happened the pairings were excellent this year.

The whole Christmas show was filmed weeks ago. It was filmed on the 7th of December.

But they see everyone dancing before they match up the contestants and celebrities, so it’s never a surprise to the Production team. And certainly in most scenarios, that first year after the glitterball the pro gets someone who is a lot less competent than who they’ve won with!

The way AJ danced in her opening jive - she wasn’t Anneka Rice until she had a week with Kai. I’m not disputing Kai’s a great teacher but he’s hardly a miracle worker! Fitness doesn’t really equate to natural rhythm imo.

I'm ok for duffers if the production team show them respect instead of writing off as comedy acts in joke outfits. But it seems the Pro dancer and the celeb have the fight to go against the production's jokevision.
Anton became a parody of himself and I couldn't bear him as a dancer especially with rubbish celebs but he's great as a judge except when he channels Len.

Dianne is the target pro to make her celebs wear ridiculous outfits and I don't think she has the power (or interest) to fight a celebs corner like bill and Oti.

Yeah I hate it when they go too far down the comedy route. Sometimes it works like with Ed Balls but a lot of the time with Anton's partners it's like they weren't even given a chance to actually learn to dance. Even if they're miles behind the rest I still want to see them learning something new and having a good time!
 
Anneka would have gone further with another pro.
Kevin's heart wasn't in it- he'd won his beloved glitterball and had probably already decided he was going at the end of the series.

Oh I agree I don’t think they all need to be an Aj standard and i Also love to see a contestant grow as the show goes on like Dan or Tilly. When I say duffer I mean a Moira Stewart/Anika rice where they are out and out tit with no hope of improving.

I wonder if they’re phasing out the ‘proper’ duffers of old, was there one last year?

There have been some real howlers over the years!

I don't think they are really phasing the duffers out - Susannah Constantine, James Cracknell & Anneka are among the top 10 worst ever dancers on the show IMO and all are fairly recent. Even 2020 had Jacqui. I think the celebs who are likely early outs tend to get more favourable dance choices now which can help (Greg, Judi & Ugo were my worst 3 this year but all had a decent draw of styles) plus this year had a few surprises like Dan, Tilly & Sara, all of whom looked like very early exits on paper. I imagine the lack of older contestants due to COVID also prevented the proper duffers from signing up this year.

Agreed on Kevin but I still doubt she'd have gone much further though because she really had no talent for dancing. She could have been given better routines that wouldn't have made her look as terrible but I think her lack of ability would have saw her out early regardless.
