Solo travel advice & recommendations

Because I’m such an independant I’ve not realised how difficult it is for some people to travel alone.
A good tip to feel safer in your room is to buy some door stops. I’ve got some from amazon and use it even when travelling with my partner. Simply because it’s easy for hotels to give a wrong room key out.

Same, one tip if people are nervous might be just to get used to doing things alone in your own town, go to lunch, to the cinema etc. I know lots of people feel nervous to do so. Once you see how easy it is in your own surroundings I imagine it is less intimidating to go elsewhere and do the same

Anyone travelled New Zealand solo? Been made redundant and thinking of going to sort my head out.
Yes I went solo. It was part of a career break and it was the first country I went to. I had a month in NZ, went to both north and south islands. Absolutely stunning country. Nice people.

This was 13 years ago so a lot has changed. I took buses around as well as some flights bc I found really cheap flights on budget carriers at the time. I went to cape reinga, paihia area, Auckland obvs, marloborough wine region (have a friend there), queenstown, Christchurch, Milford sound. Wish I went to coromandel and some other places. At the time I stayed in some budget hotels and hostels. There wasn’t air bnb at the time. Was trying to conserve money was I was traveling for a year.

Thank you

I've lost my job and they are paying out my notice period (3 months). I'm thinking if taking a break and doing some travelling. I've always wanted to go to NZ but never travelled by myself before. Thought I could go for three or four weeks any maybe add in the stopovers if I can get a couple of different places. Maybe Singapore and somewhere else.

I’m in North America so my flight was from LA to Auckland and a layover in Fiji. I should have done a proper stop in Fiji as now I wish I went. My other friend found a flight to either Oz or NZ and went to Cook Islands. Singapore is a good stop for like 24-48 hours. Amazing street food.

I chose NZ as my first country and Oz as my second bc they are English speaking countries so I could ease myself into solo travel.

This thread made me a solo travel convert and now I need a thread giving advice to people travelling with friends 😂
I'm going to Italy and Slovenia for 2 weeks in August with a friend and I'm stressing out! Firstly because I've never spent that much time with this friend, secondly because of the heat and thirdly because we're travelling around every couple of days which adds a whole other layer of stress

I'm trying to watch vlogs of 'Europe girls trip' videos for inspiration! I know lots of Americans come to Europe in the summer and travel around a lot because they have to fit so much in so I'm telling myself if they can do it I can too😅
I've coped with the heat before but that was just staying in one place and going at my own pace. I'm super anxious about getting to and from train and bus stations, coordinating check in and check out times and lugging around a suitcase at the same time!

Someone please tell me they've done something similar and it will be fine! I just need to relax and enjoy it! Most of the places we're going to aren't too touristy so I'm hoping that will make things a bit easier 🙏

You need to have a chat with your friend about both your expectations and what you are feeling stressed about.
I’ve travelled with several friends but I’m a pretty laid back traveller. At the same time I’ve always been honest about my travel style and what would irritate me. (Also I get hangry, so feed me!)

Has anyone been to Borneo? Normally I have a list of places I want to go but still the moment I'm just not inspired. Borneo is peaking my interest the most. It probably wouldn't even be next year I go but just trying to research to see how much roughly it would be. I have a big birthday in 2026 so maybe thinking of going then.
If anyone has been did you do a tour or stay in a hotel and go on day trips? Which area would be best to stay in?

Agree with this @Sprezza

Definitely have a talk with your friend before hand. I went on a group trip with my brother and his wife after a decade of solo travel. We did a road trip around Morocco which I spent 6 months organizing because it was a big dream destination for me.

It was fine but some moments of irritation. I made sure to carve out solo exploration time and meals on my own. I also booked accommodations that gave us extra space like a rooftop or living room area where I could be by myself to read and wind down alone. I’m neurodivergent so I get overstimulated easily.

In Marrakech we had a rooftop with jacuzzi and in Chefchaouen towards the end there was a cool rooftop where I met fun gay travelers who I ended up hanging out with instead of my family ha. My sister in law cared more about shopping in Marrakech whereas I went to the palace and museums and wandered to shoot photos.

I did get sick on the trip which was stressful. Also my sister in law left her purse at a restaurant with wallet money passports. Nothing was stolen but we had to double back and wasted a day of travel. It sucked and tested me because my brother lost his tit at her and I decided after no more travel with him after that ever again. I continued to do trips with my sister in law but we are similar people and easy going we just have to communicate what we want.

Yes the extra space in accommodation is a must! I get overstimulated as well so that was a concern but I'll definitely have a chat with her about our expectations

Hoping someone on here is / has been brave enough to go on holiday alone and can give me some tips!

I haven't been on holiday at all for about 5 years for various reasons plus of course the pandemic. My husband doesn't like going abroad (won't fly, everything else is too much hassle for him & he's not really interested enough to go anywhere to make the effort) and all my friends now have babies so I've got nobody to go with but I really want a holiday!

Have any of you (mainly girls) been anywhere abroad by yourselves? I'm thinking Europe, mainly. Where's safe? Where's interesting? Where's easy to go and eat alone? I feel like I'd be OK during the daytime in a city or a resort but not sure what I'd do by myself in the evenings...

Or have any of you been on those guided solo traveller trips? I usually arrange all my own travel as it's cheaper, but maybe I should go for something that's a guided thing?

Any ideas welcome!
Traveling solo can be an amazing experience, and Europe is a fantastic place for it. I recommend cities like Amsterdam, Barcelona, and Prague for a mix of safety and exciting sights. They're tourist-friendly, and you'll find plenty of solo travelers there. When it comes to eating alone, many cafes and restaurants are welcoming, and you might even find yourself chatting with locals or other travelers. If you're unsure about evenings, consider joining walking tours or cooking classes that can introduce you to new people and local culture. Guided solo traveler trips can also be a great option if you want a more structured experience with a group. A few years ago, I visited the Westgate Branson Woods Resort in Missouri, and it was an enjoyable and relaxing experience. You might consider something similar if you want a getaway closer to home. Hey guys,
I am thinking of going to Budapest next month and was hoping for any recommendations on places to visit and or accommodation. Looking at going for 3-4 days
Thanks ☺️
Go to one of the thermal baths. We stayed at the Hotel Gellert which is attached to the Gellart Spa. The hotel wasn't the nicest (would have been lovely but run down and in need of updating) but the spa was nice. We did a night river cruise with dinner as it was mum's birthday when we were out there. The parliament building is impressive and there is a memorial to Jewish ww2 victims by the River. The Fisherman's Bastion is lovely to walk around. I've got a book which details a lot of interesting highlights of Budapest, I'll pull it out when I am back.home tomorrow if you want me to look at anything in particular for you.

I'd recommend the Carat Boutique Hotel. Reasonably priced, very central and helpful staff.

I'd also recommend a tour of the parliament and a boat trip along the Danube. We went to the Szechenyi Baths and it was fab. We stayed for a good few hours there.

Budapest is a lovely city just to wander about too. We did a walking tour with Guruwalk and it was very good. Definitely try Chimney cake. It is delicious

Hi everyone, only just found this thread so sorry if this has been discussed before but has anyone here ever done a solo package holiday with tui or jet2??

(off to read all 16 pages now)

Ohh thanks guys , are the attractions easy to walk to?
I don’t mind public transport or even Ubers

We used the bus and the tram a good bit as some sights were a bit of a walk away. We used an app to buy tickets. It was explained on signs by the bus stops. From memory it was pretty straightforward.

There is a funicular up to castle which has a nice view and is a little different.

I've not but looked on Jet2 multiple times as they have the I think £30 off code for solo travel but I always find a better deal elsewhere so never actually booked with them

Thank you I didn’t know they did a code so I’ll have a look. Do you mind me asking where you’ve booked before that have the better deals??

I used live holiday this time never used them before and I heard mixed things online but I know people who used them and they had no issues. I've got two holidays booked with them now so hopefully they'll be ok. For my next trip though I might just book things all separately although I do like booking all things together makes it easier 😄
