Solo travel advice & recommendations

Got the solo travel blues and I haven't even left yet 😅
I'm going to Porto tomorrow for a few days and the weather is going to be absolutely tit plus I think I'm coming down with a cold. Can't complain though cos my mum already gets so worried about me travelling solo she'll have a breakdown if I'm not having an amazing time 100% of the time!
Trying to push through and still have a nice time 😬
Even if the weather's crap it'll be nice, I actually love being near the sea when it rains! Nice sea air, yummy food, youll have a great time!

Can anyone recommend somewhere for a holiday in October? Ideally I want somewhere warm ish and would like a mix of doing something such as exploring a city and relaxing. Looking to go away for 10 to 14 nights.

I am currently thinking Athens and then going to a couple of Islands such as Paros, Naxos etc. Weather in October from googling is low 20s. Has anyone been to Greece in October?

Other alternative is Lisbon and Algarve and a couple of other spots but as it is on the Atlantic I am thinking it would be riskier weather wise.

I am open to long haul but just looking for ideas.

Can offer long haul suggestions: Morocco, Mexico and Thailand- all good weather in Oct

I've been to Greece at the end of September / start of October before and I really enjoyed it! The weather is warm and comfortable but not hot or humid anymore, and the summer crowds have gone so there's a much more peaceful atmosphere on the islands. Always recommend Athens - one of my favourite capital cities!

I had arranged a trip to Berlin for a long weekend (it's tomorrow to Sunday) and I don't want to get into the whole story but I've been completely let down by my partner.

I could rearrange the dates. But it will cost a fortune to change it and I will lose most of what I have already paid. I'd only get 10% of the room cost refunded, and to rearrange would be a new booking. Then there's the cost of changing the flights, too. I wish I hadn't bothered.

I am tempted to just go on my own, although I'm not crazy about Berlin. Should I just go for it? They'll probably not be happy about that either, but I really don't know what to do and I'm honestly so annoyed about it all.

I'd go if I was you. I have a solo trip to Barcelona planned and thinking I might not go as I planned other trips I'd prefer with others and don't know if I'll have the spending money but see it as a waste since I've paid for hotel/flights/transfer so thinking even if I don't do much I may as well go.
It's their fault so don't feel they could be that annoyed. Do you have any friends that would be free to go? If it's just the change of name for flights they'll have to pay for they may be happy to go

Go, as you say you are dammed if you do and dammed if you don’t. You’ve paid for the trip go and enjoy it 🩷

Berlin would be great! Do a bit of sightseeing in the day and then if you don't fancy going out to eat in an evening, hole up with a takeaway or supermarket food and watch Netflix. Aside from anything else, it's a lesson for your partner in not letting you down and assuming you'll be fine with it.

I would go. Explain to partner it's a lot of money to lose. I'd go and just do boring stuff like reading in a nice park and enjoying my own company. Maybe see if there are any good films on or a show I'd like to see.
We went to Hamburg to see friends and I absolutely hated the place. Nothing to do but shop. So we spent the day time sleeping in and just wondering from coffee shop to hotel, people watching.
Luckily we had plans for the evening with friends

In regards to Barcelona if you've already paid for everything then I would plan a day of hiking up the mountain and spend the rest at the beach reading and relaxing. Lots of cheap food about.
I weren't a big fan of Barcelona so get why you might feel it's a waste but you've paid for it so go and at least try to get some R&R

I'm going in mid October not sure it'll be hot enough I am hoping it'll be hot enough one day for the beach. But I'm hoping I'll have more money then I think 🤞

I must admit I'm really surprised anyone thinks there's nothing to do in Hamburg but shop. There are art museums, Miniatur Wonderland, boat trips, the Elbphilharmonie, lovely parks, churches to explore, monuments etc.

Thank you so much @Former_Antelopee @Zulkraa @Megansnarkle @OnlyHereForTheLolz @misunderstood for your replies and advice 💓 you're all so right. I'm going to do it!

I am packing my bag now and quite excited by the thought of heading off tomorrow solo. I haven't told him that I'm actually going yet, I might just let him know when I'm there because it'll be a whole back and forth fuss if I tell him I'm going to go on ahead.

Send him a picture of you on the plane then turn your phone off 😅

YASS! Have the best time and remember that even if you don't, you've seen somewhere new when you could have been at home having lost money.

I'm so glad you're going! Hope you have a fab time.

I just went to Helsinki on my own. Decided to basically treat it as if I'd gone to London for the weekend. I had such a nice time, did A LOT of walking, enjoyed having a massive hotel bed all to myself. The main thing I noticed was that local women hang out by themselves, so why can't I?

I went to The Netherlands on my own for 4 days when I was 24, in April 2018. I got a flight + hotel package deal for £300 on Last minute .com and flew with Ryanair. I stayed in Zaandam (which is lovely) and would get the train into Amsterdam every day, which was only about a 20 minute journey.
I remember crying when I checked into the hotel and got to my room - I was scared and overwhelmed! But after a good night's sleep, I felt better.
I had a good time and felt safe - although there was this one shopkeeper in Amsterdam who seemed a bit creepy, asking me to try on a T shirt, but other than that it was great. I spent most of my days just walking around and shopping really, it was relaxing and I felt free to be able to do what I wanted, when I wanted.

I am definitely looking to travel solo again soon, I'm thinking somewhere in Ireland this time.

Because I’m such an independant I’ve not realised how difficult it is for some people to travel alone.
A good tip to feel safer in your room is to buy some door stops. I’ve got some from amazon and use it even when travelling with my partner. Simply because it’s easy for hotels to give a wrong room key out.
