Back in the late 90s/2000 I used to catch the odd episode and it always seemed to be Carrie in her apartment, wearing big pants and on the phone to Big. I remember thinking he was a bit weird, I didn't know the character's name and just thought of him as the creepy dude with big eyebrows who said "hey, kid" a lot.
I started getting into it some time during series 4 and couldn't understand the whole Big thing when Carrie had Aidan (who was looking at his hottest - as Samantha said when seeing him at his bar opening "Does he look better or have I been with a woman for too long?!" ) - it was only when I bought the DVDs and started watching from the beginning that I started to see the appeal of Big.
I think it kind of resonated as I had recently broken up with an emotionally unavailable type who made me act a bit "Carrie" (AKA crazy) and who, like Big, would break my heart and then, just as I picked myself back up and started to move on, he'd come back into my life. This happened several times and I'd keep going back so it kind of resonated for me (albeit in my life the clothes and settings weren't nearly as glamorous).
Anyway, unlike Carrie, I didn't end up with the guy but, I did get married (to someone else) at City Hall in New York!
Think that's where the similarities end however.
Wish I had her figure, her ability to wear anything (almost) and make it work (almost-though there were a few stinkers in her wardrobe over the years).
Watching the whole series again last year with my husband, he turned me and and said "Carrie is actually a really selfish character. I hadn't realised it before" - completely echoing my thoughts. Yet I still can't help but love her in a way, flaws and all ("like the wood" ).
FAVE episodes: 'A Woman's Right To Shoes' (how much of a witch was Keira?!), 'Splat!' and I loved the two part finale (also resonated massively having been to Paris and having had a miserable time.. not with a Russian, I hasten to add, but God! I hated Petrovsky and yay! Miranda for telling Carrie like it was about how she was around him!).
One final thing, nitpicking here but did it used to drive anyone else crazy when people would call it 'Sex IN the City'???! ... or was that just me?!
