Hahaha, It's the only one I have enjoyed!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣I'm an OG satc fan, and I keep saying I won't bother anymore with AJLT.....but here I am, again, another week on hate watching it!!
But yeh, I admit I did enjoy it!!! 🙈🙈🙈🙈

That was me with last weeks episode! Randomly liked it and then back to loathing it this week. Must have just really been in a good mood last week 🤣

Inspired by this thread yesterday I decided to watch the OG SATC from the start…. And… I kinda hated it. I know it’s from the 90s but the whole first episode was based around the idea that they way men and women enjoy sex is soooooo different and that men hold all the power (an idea only rejected by our queen Samantha) and that basically everyone in the world is just desperately on the look out for a man to marry. The whole thing gave me the ick. It was so grim and pathetic and unempowering. The jealousy of the models, the filming of women without their knowledge or consent, the constant smoking, the tokenism of the lesbian character and Miranda just planting a kiss on her to ‘test it out’… it really was a different time!

I agree to an extent, definitely agree about the icky predatory behaviour, but with regards to the worries and concerns of the women- at least there was honesty involved in the writing. It was true to what the majority of people were thinking and feeling at the time, there was a reason for its popularity with women, it was grim and unempowering back then, which is also why Samantha was a favourite character with people.
Times have changed indeed, but now, AJLT is built on experiences that OG SATC fans just cannot relate to. They’re pandering to an audience and experiences that just aren’t in the crowd for this series. There’s a dishonesty in them saying that ‘this is what women (specifically these women) worry about nowadays’.

I also still don't think it is that out of date in this topic anyway, I'm.not interested in getting married but most of my female friends were/are, I find the idea of waiting to be proposed to insane but I think almost all of my female friends did so (and in many cases they are actually the breadwinner of the couple) things have changed but I still don't think it is that outdated (except the things with people being bi/lesbian etc that does seem very dated

There are the things about the show that have aged terribly (Carrie's views on bisexuality, the use of gay men as accessories, bodyshaming and lack of diversity vs portrayal of poc, I could go on...) Where it was groundbreaking and different was that it showed women liked sex, talked about sex and something extremely rare: that some women could be perfectly happy having casual sex and that was okay.

Even with topics like sexuality I think people would be surprised by how outdated some peoples views can still be, especially people that don’t live in big cities and see a culturally diverse range of people. Not in an obviously derogatory way, as the vast majority of people are in full support of things like gay marriage and adoption ect, but there’s an episode where the speak about bisexual men are just gay men experimenting before they settle down with a man. I’ve heard similar things said by multiple people in real life who would think of themselves as pretty liberal on their views, so I don’t think similar conversations amongst 4 women would be that difficult to come by.

I think a lot of people like the idea of being a Samantha, but most people are actually the other 3. Charlotte is a 2nd place to me for being the most sexually liberated after Samantha and I think is where most people fall.

Very true, I think that aspect seems very dated as it is set in new york, I don't doubt that many people in small towns etc probably do think similar things. But I remember friends (in London) saying very similar things about bisexuality around the time satc was first on

I think the only good lesson SATC ever taught us was "He's Just Not That Into You". I believe it spawned a film that probably undid the message completely in typical rom-com style. So many rom-coms reflect and then encourage really stupid behaviour. This was a message women needed to hear after coming up with every excuse for a man who hasn't returned a call.

E.g: "High Fidelity" - look lads, if you stalk and harass a woman whose heart you broke for long enough, and show off your indie music knowledge,, she'll get back with you!

Carrie in SATC - if you make yourself eternally available to a guy who just thinks you're a convenient duck, he'll eventually marry you, after jilting you in your Vivienne Westwood!

I think the whole point is that there’s a bit of them in all of us! Even the most die hard Samantha in real life has a bit of Charlotte, a bit of Carrie’s giggly disbelief, self centredness and immaturity and a bit of Miranda’s straight talking ambition, and vice versa. There’s no such thing as a woman who’s all about casual sex 100%, a woman who’s about marriage 100% and a woman who only cares about her career 100%. However all those choices were presented as possibilities, however you want to combine them :)

Yeh thats why it worked well, they were kind of the "extremes" of each personality type so worked well together . I think the number one thing that changed for me as I rewatch is just now awful Carrie is 🤣

Lurker on the thread and someone's probably said this before but I'm rewatching SATC and I'm genuinely baffled at how Carrie always got the hot, successful guys. She's pretty but she's nowhere near the knockout of the group, her dress sense often sucks (I'm sorry, don't hate me), her flirting always looks forced and overthought, she's judgemental, impatient, toxic, a bad kisser and supposedly FANTASTIC in bed even though she always seems to be laying on her back.

She's insufferable to me this time around. I'm struggling to remember why I ever liked her 😂

Maybe guys can sense from the off that she’ll be a pushover, or they know she has an article so it’s like a goal to get a feature? I think the other girls have higher standards as well, there’s absolutely no way any of the other 3 would go back to Big after some of the stuff he did, but especially after the wedding situation.

Me again. Actually had to do some work so haven’t been able to have my daily SATC rants. Just watching the Ep with jazzzzz guy and Sam is seeing Maria. Naturally Carrie is the WORST and most judgemental about Sam’s relationship. She literally makes lesbian and vagina jokes throughout. And then when Sam calls her to talk about having feelings for Maria, Carrie completely dismisses her and starts getting it on with jazzzzzzz guy whilst still in the phone to Sam. Also, when they all raise concerns about her ‘friendship’ with Big and all the red flags, Carrie is a complete witch to them all. duck off Carrie.

Oh my god, her kissing! It gives me the ick so much! 😂
