Prolly breaking the contractual agreements with slebs (& their agents) would bring considerable legal grief to the BBC, as tho’ they don’t have enough in their plates. Given the beeb’s capacity & record for mucking stuff up, airing two episodes with the slebs was the most straight forward thing to do.

Which hasn't happened to the other two. Both have mentioned being inundated with support by colleagues and fans.

Referees Craig Napier and Lloyd Wilson are also out, following in the footsteps of the great Nigel Owens of rugby union (comment about a throw: "I'm straighter than that!")

Edit to add: it's 26 years since Justin Fashanu died and 34 years since he came out publicly. Things have moved on.

TBH I don't think the chants are intended as homophobic per se - it's just something to chant about. Football is very tribal. The fans find something to mock brutally about everyone and anyone including the ref and linesmen. Being gay does make for an easy target, obviously, but so does being bald, having a mention in the newspapers etc, and as David Breckham famously discovered, having a "posh" wife. ("Posh Spice Takes It Up The Arse" is still a perennial favourite0
