I mean, each to their own and all that, but she's just way too 'jolly holly sticks' for me. Give me a working class hero like young Sal any dayAh I haven’t seen that! Thought she came across quite pleasant

I have a teenager. She wears Sol De Janeiro, like all of mates. They shop at Sephora and SpaceNK. SH is so out of touch.
I read that and the bit I remember was her saying: there are no rights or wrongs so you can make up any old pretentious twaddle. She may not have put it quite like that but you can see how writing/talking about perfume is a good fit for her.I'm annoyed I forgot to screenshot, or even read tbh, Sali's q & a answer to 'What makes a good perfume writer'. It was long and I think the first bit was don't try to copy anyone else. But sadly she didn't save it so we'll never know
I love the way these knobs try to pretend describing a perfume is an art and soooo difficult. It just really isn't.
(I used to really really dislike Alice DP, still can't watch her tbh, but I do like the way she isn't a terrible snob and will happily talk about M & S dupes and Arianna Grande alongside the most obscure and niche stupidly expensive perfume).
rachel syme’s now defunct perfume newsletter was some of the best perfume writing I have read - you can still read old ones on substack. It is called The Dry Down. I don’t like Luca Turin because I think he is too bitchy.
Ma Griffe reminds me of the Kitty sketch written by Victoria Wood performed by Patricia Routledge.Mine was Ma Griffe from the same little heard of boutique Le Boots Don't know if you can still get it. I remember loving it at the time. Silly me not wearing it decades later as my signature scent.
My daughter's at the same age was Tommy Girl. She would not have appreciated being carted off to Jo Malone to choose something subtle.
I wore Rive Gauche to see Bob Dylan and David Bowie. Call me an old beef faced Nana but IDGAF either. It’s just the beauty version of those blokes who collect vinyl, and show off about obscure bands nobody has heard of.

I wore LouLou to see REM and IDGAF
Omg I loved Ysatis, and then Amarige.I wore Ysatis to see REM
Yessss, same time frame. I also wore Rive Gauche and BeautifulOmg I loved Ysatis, and then Amarige.
I would say Ysatis was my 'signature' for about 5 years in the early 90s. With a foray into Elizabeth Taylor White Diamonds, and bizarrely a Salvador Dali one in a lips bottle. And a Paloma Picasso one (my OH travelled a lot and picked up random perfumes in duty free ).
I loved Ysatis... but it used to attract (African) flies! I had to give it up after standing at a bus stop with my own personal cloud of flies.I wore Ysatis to see REM
My aunt still buys it for me. I don't have the heart to tell her I stopped wearing 30 years ago
What an imageI loved Ysatis... but it used to attract (African) flies! I had to give it up after standing at a bus stop with my own personal cloud of flies.
Don't give Sali ideas for her next Perfume DiariesWhat an image
