Read it all. Nah that's an odd interview and it's on Decca Aitkenhead. LL comes off fine just protecting herself.

Sorry if I’m being ignorant here. Does anyone know anything about the journalist who did the interview and wrote the piece? I don’t know anything about them. Do they have a particular axe to grind?

I had to google Decca because the name rang a bell. I know nothing about her as a journalist but years ago read her very personal story of how her husband tragically died whilst on holiday with their kids.
The extract from The Times interview is scathing to say the least, it does leave an impression there’s something personal going on between her and LL.

Decca replaced Lynn Barber which I was gutted about at the time. Lynn is one the greats. But she was open about not getting along with the magazine editor. And they published an article Lynn wrote about when she took in an asylum seeker (it didn’t go well) - The ST was sued and had to pay out a substantial sum I believe. Writing was probably on the wall then.

I am finding it hard to warm to Decca’s interviewing style but Lynn’s shoes are enormous ones to fill.

I must admit I enjoy a write up of an interview where they don’t get along.. feeling the delicious tension leak out of the paragraphs. As far as I know Decca doesn’t have an axe to grind but who knows? Maybe one interviewer not having a lot of respect for another’s style or lack thereof.

Very strange and unpleasant piece, especially considering Laverne did it to promote a Dementia charity. It reads more like a contribution to a campaign to get her off DID than a genuine interview.

I really like her on DID and I think she's done some great interviews on there - Bob Mortimer and Stephen Graham spring to mind.

I haven't read the whole thing - just the extract here and it does come across as if the interviewer had a problem with her from the start, before she'd opened her mouth, which maybe LL was reacting to? Who knows. As I said I'm mostly a bit indifferent to LL but never had her down as dull tbh.

I read the whole interview and had no idea that the point of it was to promote the dementia charity. It was just tossed in as an aside. That is undeniably crappy of DA.

Imagine how tit LL must feel.

I have no feeling either way with regard to her, I don’t watch or listen to anything she does but :

“So my heart sinks when she appears at the restaurant and the energy in the room plummets like a stone before she has even sat down...... is really harsh .

not LL’s biggest fan, but I don’t mind her. Bit indifferent. I preferred her 6Music show after Shaun Keaveney, think he was just better at breakfast time.

I do think LL is pretty good on DID, there have been a few slightly awkward ones, ironically the Emily Eavis one I too thought was awful. Have always thought Lauren comes across as quite bright and articulate. Thought Decca’s article seemed really harsh and a bit personal. No idea if there is a backstory there.

SH will be itching to throw out some pompous, trite defensive crap. That’s where her mentality lies. Actually I think LL has the sort of career SH would punch her in the tits for.

p.s. Mary Ann Hobbs on 6music bores me to tears in the morning AND do you thing the cringe ‘Hiya’ was dropped deliberately

Decca Aikenhead has done a hatchet job on several other people she’s interviewed in the past.
Has she? That’s interesting. I’m quite surprised that such a scathing article has passed through editorial approval. I’m no fan of LL but the bit of the article that was quoted was seriously biased.

Unpopular opinion: I’m open-minded about this interview as I suspect LL is ruthless and overconfident without enough intellect and creativity to justify it.. plus the company she keeps is dubious and there’s that snippet of her egging that guy on to slag off his wife....

Don’t know anything about Decca but if I were to bet I might say she’s insightful and brave and she wouldn’t have to be so forceful about her view if everyone else wasn’t so pandering all the time.

@Jade Mitzi, am with you re. Mary Ann. Cerys Matthews I find too zen and folks-y.
Love Nemone, Huey Morgan and Radcliffe and Maconie. And of course Shaun Keaveny.
Also always been a massive fan of Sara Cox, she is so funny and comes across as herself and genuine.
Love Huey! His music is right up my street. Shaun and the others are ok too. I also quite like Liz Kershaw, but I find Mary Anne a right drone... not a huge fan of Cerys either... it’s very try hard . Anyway Sara Cox is always good and am warming back up to Zoe Ball as I can’t stand LL - she’s just a bit bloody boring .
