Not a great day for Lauren Laverne..

“So my heart sinks when she appears at the restaurant and the energy in the room plummets like a stone before she has even sat down. For the next two hours I try everything to rev it up again, but am comprehensively thwarted. I strike up more of a rapport with the woman who checks in my coat than I ever manage with Laverne, and as our lunch goes on, I’m horrified to hear myself becoming equally flat. By the time we leave, the cloakroom attendant seems considerably more charismatic than either of us.

“To criticise an interviewer after failing to get much out of her myself is obviously a bit rich. But although lots of interviewees work hard at revealing nothing, the puzzle about Laverne is that she has nothing to hide; she just doesn’t seem to know what would make for an interesting conversation.

“How to convey the dreariness of an interview is always tricky. If I don’t provide lots of dull quotes to illustrate the point, why would readers believe me? But if I do, I’ll just bore you. So I can only invite you to imagine for yourself the reams of tedium you’ve been spared. She tells me anecdotes she must realise I’ve read numerous times in previous interviews, and prefers to talk in vague generalities instead of telling details. She is so relentlessly low-wattage about everything that, in a desperate bid to animate her, I resort to asking what drives her mad. “I think unfairness and unkindness.” That’s not going to give readers much sense, I wail, of who you are! Who in the world would cite fairness and kindness as reasons to be angry?”

Another one who doesn’t recognise her own limitations. I used to quite like her when she did the later morning show on radio 6, but she’s ruined the breakfast show for me, and now desert island discs. It’s all gone to her head.

She’s useless at interviewing people as it’s all about her. She had Stuart Copeland on the other day and kept interrupting him, never let him finish a story without her jumping in to display her knowledge of something. She does it all the time. So infuriating to listeners when you have music industry veterans or other interesting people with rich histories that you want to hear about. She’s insufferable.

I know if you’re offered positions it’s difficult to turn them down, but the media is like any job, surely both you and your management should be monitoring your performance and identifying your weaknesses and limitations. I don’t understand how time and time again we end up getting short changed with tv and radio presenters who clearly aren’t up to the job!

@Shineyshine, same here, the breakfast slot on 6Music with Shaun Keaveny was one of my favourite parts of the day. Since she’s stepped in, i still have the radio on but can’t help and feel sad it’s not the same anymore. The infuriating thing is that even any of the other hosts that step in when she’s on leave are a better option compared to her. I find her relentless positivity and blandness in never offering even a glimpse of controversial opinion in case she offends anyone quite off-putting. And the fake posh accent is annoying together with the over-use of grand words such as ‘eponymous’.

Blimey that interview is brutal. I always thought LL would be quite sparky in real life. I don't dislike her on DID but don't find her inspiring. Adequate. I didn't like the Emily Eavis one at all as LL kept shoehorning in her own Glastonbury experience. I know she isn't everyone's cup of tea but I thought Clare Balding might be good to replace Kirsty as she does seem to have a natural and genuine curiosity about people. Maybe a bit too gushing. Lauren is well, just OK.

Yes! When Stuart Maconie filled in for her a few weeks ago we never wanted her to come back 😂 Especially when he was handing over at the end of the show and they were talking about the old NME days and stories of what they got up to. I wish they’d just get somebody else to do the breakfast show. It’s gone right downhill.

I was pleased Decca brought up The Pool. That’s good journalism. The answer though! But again it’s good journalism to let Lauren’s response speak for itself.
Oh dear. Not much empathy from LL then. She really was a rat leaving a sinking ship. Not a good look. I'm sure she doesn't regret it if she got out unscathed (no idea if she did so speculation on my part).

Inspidness was always her line on The Pool"s demise wasn't it?

I have her on in the morning because I'm basically institutionalised by 6Music but I don't listen carefully and I don't care if I can't hear it clearly - I used to have Shaun turned up loud. Really enjoyed Maconie's stint.

She was everso spikey when she was younger and for years, is it a Beeb requirement to bland yourself? Which isn't to say people don't grow and change but I do think the bland is a construct.

I think she has some interesting features on her show - that are bout inquisitiveness etc .... she always struck me as pretty smart really and I've never been a fan.

Will Sali be livid, will she ride to the defence of one of her girl gang?

Exactly the same here - we used to actually listen to Sean’s words, whereas after giving her a fair crack, unfortunately Lauren is just background noise.

Surely The Pack will be under instruction not to acknowledge it. She was slated before for being too thick for DID and they all went apoplectic on her behalf so I suppose the position on that has already been made.

She was. I remember reading interviews in the music press during the Kenickie days and they were gobby, confrontational and political (and really young, obvs). Even when she moved into ”yoof” TV presenting, she was funny and edgy. Did anyone watch her on the 10 o’clock show on Channel 4? I can’t even imagine her doing a show like that anymore.

She’s blandness personified now and it must have been a calculated move. It gets her a shitload of work, at least.

Yikes. Not LL's biggest fan but thought this:

“So my heart sinks when she appears at the restaurant and the energy in the room plummets like a stone before she has even sat down. was unnecessary and below the belt. I'm sure SH will be crash-landing to LL's defence. Soon. Shortly. Any day now.
