I know people who've got in on the ballot more than once but I feel like if I got in that way I wouldn't bother entering the ballot again. I haven't bothered entering, I can't really afford to go to London if I get in so I didn't bother. I wasn't that far off a GFA time on my first marathon which I trained cautiously for (I just wanted to get round without getting injured) so I think I could train and get in that way if I really wanted to do it.

Just got my official no.

I've got the landmarks half in april. Wondering if I should think about booking a different marathon... would be 2024 as would be a struggle to get marathon ready this year. Anyone got any course recommendations (Looked at Manchester but its the weekend after and work would make this very tricky!)

if landmarks is your first half I’d look at an autumn marathon… if you want something big there is always trying for the Berlin ballot (may be an urban myth but apparently overseas women have a really good strike rate in it).
Yorkshire is probably one of the bigger ones now Bournemouth has gone defunct.
Loch Ness and Chester are also in October.
I wouldn’t rush getting up to the marathon distance too quickly, learn how to train (I don’t meant to sound patronising…) but learn how you fit it in over shorter distances, how to fuel, what gear works for you (I love my saucony speeds but they hurt my feet after about 16 miles, finding that out on the day would not be ideal). It doesn’t get easier and can really eat up a lot of time.

Yes that is a good shout. London would have been extremely ambitious but there would be something about doing it as the first one. September would likely be a good shout for Berlin next year, have put in my calender to check after this year's race.

Gear is also a good shout. Love my ghosts but my feet are extremely blister prone. Even with good socks. Especially balls of feet (right on pad but also on inner edge) and last few longer runs have given me one on end of 2nd toe).
Anyone got tips for how to toughen up feet?

Can't help with balls of feet (I got a killer one there in my last half). But I used a silicon toe sleeve /cap thing which worked to stop blood blisters on the end of one of my toes.

Do you wear that under socks or over?

I probably need to up my cadence. Naturally around the 160, can get up to around high 160s/170 if I really think about it but tends to err on slower side which probably makes me more heavy footed

Not so much toughening up feet but finding the right shoe will help. I suffered from blisters on the balls of my feet and big toe for years before I found a shoe that fitted properly and didn't rub, I bought 7 pairs of them (when they were on offer) and I have 5 pairs of the ones I'm running in now. I still get occasional hotspots on long runs but haven't had a blister in years.

I find my ghosts otherwise really comfy and I do feel they fit well (and got after a gait assessment). But my feet have always been very delicate when it comes to shoes etc and I get blisters so easily

Under socks! Although it feels weird at first and hard to put your socks on as they drag on the silicon.

Thanks!

Not really a runner, (but I can dream!), more long (100k +) walker.
One school of thought is to keep your feet soft and supple.
Tape your known hot spots.
Google lacing techniques .
Read the book 'fixing your feet' - admittedly this is aimed more at multi day events, but the same things apply.

Wow 100k! Over what kind of time? I'm assuming multi day kind of thing? TBH I probably need to just have more time on feet as even when I walk its relatively short distances.

Do you not find that tape rubs?

Yes switched trail shoes as was getting numb toes. New pair did the same so changed the lacing so have less over toe box and definitely helped!

I have tried taping the balls of my feet but it just rubs at the edges and forms an uncomfortable ridge, I've tried taped round my whole foot and the same happens. My husband was marshalling at a 100 mile race last weekend and one lady was wrapping duct tape round her feet! She did have an issue with her toes and duct tape was the only thing that helped but she had to stop and reapply it every so often.

Yes I think it would be similar for me. But I guess it is something to consider trying in future runs.
I'm likely to get another pair of Ghosts for everyday runs but may go to running store and look around for something a bit more cushioned for longer runs in future

exactly my experience. And in my old club, I was told that "because the GFA and championship entries" there were less for the ballot, like...sorry for training hard?
You know that is bollocks right? They do championship and GFA partly so there is a steady stream of runners… not just the elites and then an enormous gap until the charity / ballot runners. They have a quota for GFA and assume only a tiny proportion hit championship. Ive been in the champ start 4 times now and it’s not exactly a massive crowd at all…

I think FPS point was that people saying that are ridiculous

The only people I’ve ever come across who do it years in a row are either people who do it for the same charity and have a really compelling “story” or people who have GFA/ championship places. I’ve never seen anyone get in on a ballot more than a couple of times
My OH's Dad has done it a few years in a row (a few years ago now, tbf) because he always managed to get a club place as he was in a club that was pretty much all middle distance runners.

So many rejections in our club this year - normally our club gets 4 or 5 places and we have maybe 30 people requesting entry, so far already there's 60 people commenting they've been rejected and want to go into the draw.

Do you not find that tape rubs?

I've done it continuously, generally taking slightly over 24 hours.
Be careful with your choice of tape - pick a smooth tape (like KT or duct tape) then the socks can move over the tape.
If it is a rough tape, probably like fabric plaster, the sock sticks to it so then the only movement can be between the top layers of skin, leading to blisters.
