Period Drama Fans

Oh just thought of another few - I need to see where we can possibly watch them:

Mistrals Daughter
North and South
Kane and Abel

Just thought of another good one - Far from the Madding Crowd with Carey Mulligan. The music is stunning.

I don't usually like Thomas Hardy stories cos they're so dark and miserable. E.g Jude the Obscure with Christopher Eccleston and Kate Winslet or Tess of the D'Urbervilles with Gemma Arterton and Eddie Redmayne.

I love a good period drama, it seems a shame that they're all but disappearing from TV lately. The BBC and ITV used to be reliable for the Sunday night slot.

A few of my favourites:
Any BBC Jane Austen adaptation
The 1995 Ang Lee Sense and Sensibility
Jane Eyre (I'll watch any but have a soft spot for the one with Ruth Wilson in 2006)
The White Queen
Marie Antoinette 2022
Casanova 2005
All Creatures Great and Small 70's adaptation but only while they had the original Helen.
Picnic at Hanging Rock
BBC's And Then There Were None
Rillington Place
The Secret of Crickley Hall

Naff ones I enjoy watching are the Catherine Cookson adaptations from the 90's. Often unintentionally funny.

At the weekend I watched Dirty Dancing and Emma, as both were on TV. I haven't seen the older adaptations of Emma, but I live the Anya Taylor- Joy version. It is one of those films that I want to watch all the way through if I find it whilst channel surfing. I love all the costumes and the quirky sense of humour it has, no idea if it is accurate.

I watched Emma at the weekend too but I’m not a fan of this adaptation. For me, Mr Knightley just wasn’t right. I can’t explain it but he wasn’t mature enough for that part, and in my head, Knightley has dark hair 😁

She is in Peaky Blinders series 5 and 6, playing the manipulative wife of one character, but that is 1930s so don't know if that is what you would be after.

She does look convincingly like she could be in another era, some actors have to much of a modern looking face. She looks very striking, but not obviously modern if that makes sense imo.

Olivia Cooke was great as Becky Sharpe.

She's such an interesting character - she's calculated and manipulative, but also she's a woman in a man's world playing the game with the cards dealt to her.
Becky's a brilliant character - totally unscrupulous, but you can't help admire her courage and determination - and not an ounce of self-pity. A much more interesting woman than that wet rag Amelia!

I started watching Cranford last night. I was surprised at how many well known actors are in it.

I like how it mixes low level small town drama and gentle comedy, with lots of heartbreaking death.
I was just going to suggest Cranford. I really loved it - very gentle stories and a superb cast.

I enjoyed Middlemarch some years ago, but I don't know where it might be available now. Also The Barchester Chronicles.

And does Mapp and Lucia count as period drama? It was excellent!

Loved Cranford and return to Cranford, the Barchester Chronicles where excellent, also like the Forsyth Saga, the daily mail gave away cd of various dramas years ago might find them in charity shop I have the full set in my craft room.

I love Harlots. I watched it during lockdown as BBC started showing it. Which was odd, because it started off on ITV and then went to a streaming site.

It really helped get me through parts of lockdown, having new episodes to watch each week.

I watch a lot of programmes on my iPad when I’m in the bath (I do take long baths).
After watching Harlots in the bathroom I had to explain to my family that I was not watching porn in there! 😬
They said they did wonder after hearing it! 😆
