That was very interesting.
I’m extremely not interested or educated in politics.

One question though…

“Only children of working parents should be eligible for government-funded childcare”

If you didn’t work, why would you need your children in child care?! Is this silly question?

Friendly looking chap

Charming isn’t he?
At times I had wondered was Jay Slator ever in that country, but reading things over the past 24hrs I think things have taken an awful bad turn.

I suppose perhaps if you didn’t work due to disability or whatever then childcare could be a respite but do see your point lol!

most children who are from families on benefits are the ones who get the full time nursery places / usually the first criteria for any admission is if the family is receiving any benefits. think it's to make sure that 'disadvantaged' children do not lose out in terms of their education. it is very very very frustrating though when you are 2 full time working parents and the most you usually get is a nursery place for 9am - 11.45am and you have no way of getting them there or collecting them because you start work before 9.

Most people on benefits are actually working, it’s gov spin makes it look like they’re sitting on their ass sponging.

If you were a disabled parent, if your child was disabled and needed specialist care, if you were an unpaid carer for another family member. I cared for my Dad for a short time but my kids are a good age and were in school so it was fine but if I’d had a baby or toddler in the mix I don’t think I’d have managed too well.

They did announce the new 22.5 hours scheme but I think it read it might take 10 years to implement it 🙄 so the toddlers of today will be in secondary school by the time it comes in 🫠

Anyone been out to vote yet? I was just about to go but this bloody weather has just started pissing down so I’ll wait a while. If I get asked in an exit poll I’ll probs just make up someone I voted for. Still deciding on what my not very big or clever spoiled ballot is going to say.

Yep, it's to try and balance out the "disadvantage" of being from a lower income household. It has the effect of penalising people with higher paying jobs but the intention is to level the playing field for children.

Think how the Scottish feel 🥶 What happens if you just don’t bother voting?

Obviously I’m voting in England but I went out at 7am as soon as it opened. I couldn’t be dealing with the queues and people annoying me. Apparently a few “‘naughty” people arrive to intimidate people around here, according to one of the workers - no one was there when we went though!

i haven’t voted in years but last time I was at a polling station in the UK it was super private and no one could see the votes, but now there was barely a divider between us and a lot of staff standing behind us. A lot of our town will probably be going for the total opposite party than we voted for and so Mr P got annoyed and told them to duck off 😂😂😂

side note, how was the interview @Grifty Mc?

It’s not a great system at the moment. All children deserve the same chances in life and that’s a hill I’ll die on but making it unaffordable for working people is grossly unfair.

Yeah I don’t think Martha was against it with her question as I can see at face value why you might think it isn’t needed. If you don’t have first hand experience of disabilities/caring etc you may not realise.

Thanks for asking. I think it was ok. But now it is just waiting to see if they like me kind of thing. I’m happy enough with what I said in it so will see. Fingers crossed something happens.

I agree with this. Isn’t this what Surestart organisations are for? To provide children who may be at home with their caregivers all day a chance to socialise at a few programs during the week & also the 2-3 year old program which is about 9 hours a week? Is there actually children with stay at home parents (who are not carers/disabled themselves etc) who are in subsidised childcare during the week? That blows my mind if there are?

I mean if I was a hypothetical millionaire with kids (don’t have either lol) I would probably get a nanny and go out to lunch all the time. Don’t know if you ever go on the site for mums but I can’t believe the amount of them who have nanny’s the lucky witches!

Surestart is great and about the only decent thing Tony Blair ever done but there just isn’t enough of them and it’s a postcode lottery I believe? A child could be disadvantaged but not living in one of their specified ward areas so it doesn’t reach everyone who needs it unfortunately. They were talking about pulling the funding for it not that long ago.
There will be children of non working parents who have social services involved who are in subsidised childcare too. For me, I’d rather those children were somewhere safe being fed and looked after than the alternative. There are plenty of children who probably should be in care who are at home with unfit parents and SS can do nothing because they have nowhere to put them. A sad reality for too many children unfortunately but if they can get some sense of normality at childcare then I hope it continues.

I don’t know what the solution is but working families deserve help too. The whole system needs an overhaul.
