No Americans who have good healthcare would ever describe it as “astronomical” because 1) they are used to the system and 2) your contribution isn’t actually “astronomical”.

There is a thread going on at the moment about reasons not to move to America for a job and almost everyone on it mentions healthcare, showing they know absolutely duck all about how it actually works. I will always support universal healthcare but if you have insurance, which the original poster would definitely have as it would a move to take up a good job, the care puts the current NHS to utter shame. Again, I’m not defending the system, it’s awful if you’re underinsured, but that would not have been the case for the poster.

The 650 calorie thread is peak mumsnet. Nobody is bothering to actually read OP's posts where she says she is following a plan recommended and used by the NHS (New You plan), they are all just piling on and saying how awful it is. But then if somebody posts to say that they are fat and want to lose weight, they all recommended MM's 800 calorie diet

I saw that and started reading through it. Something’s not right with it, and it sounds made up. Some of the phrasing and vocabulary makes me think it was not written by an American. And then the dead giveaway was “astronomical healthcare costs”. To us, they’re not astronomical. Especially not if you have, checks notes, “free insurance”, as claimed by the poster. He’s supposed to be early 30s, and by all accounts fit and healthy. So healthcare is probably no more than an annual physical (which is covered by insurance), and then maybe a doctor visit for a minor ailment once a year. Ear infection, sore throat, that kind of thing. So that would be a $25 co-pay and a $10 script. Hardly astronomical. Even my major life-saving surgery, ICU stay, physical therapy, medications, etc came to $3000. And that was my MOOP done for the year. And if he’s maxing out his 401k (very sensible) then he should also be maxing out his HSA (also sensible). Something doesn’t make sense.

Oh interesting, I had wondered what your take on it would be given you obviously know what the stuff he’s talking about means. Do you think it’s a troll or someone exaggerating?

Some of the replies on the AMA thread sound as if the posters are jealous of the OP. She's following a structured meal replacement diet, and losing weight. She's not doing a ridiculous bootcamp or seeing how long she can last with no food whatsoever. She's an overweight woman who is tackling her weight successfully, with medical support, and Mumsnetters don't like that. I'm surprised no-one has chipped in that they regularly consume less than 650 calories a day in order to maintain their teeny tiny size 6 frames.

Exactly! Unless you’ve lived in another country, you don’t think healthcare here is “astronomical”. And for the average healthy person it isn’t even an issue anyway. There’s nothing like a “thinking of moving to the US” thread on there to get them all going with their nonsense from the tabloids, abortion, guns, people being bankrupted by tonsillitis, etc. They know nothing. And much as I can see the benefit of universal healthcare, I’ll take what we have here and our lower taxes any day. Florida has no state income tax.

Thanks to the ACA (affordable care act), any company with more than 50 FTE employees MUST provide healthcare to the employees. The employee can refuse to take it (for example if their spouse works for a company that gets even better healthcare than what’s offered) , and the employer can choose to cover some or all of the cost, but the bottom line is that if you’re employed by a company with more than 50 people, you have insurance available to you. And if the company is in the business of bringing in employees from overseas it’s very likely that they have over 50 employees. A smaller company is unlikely to meet the criteria to be able to sponsor an overseas worker.

Mumsnet loves fatties who stay fat. Makes them feel a lot better about themselves. It’s almost like “of course try and lose weigh, jump through all the traditional weightloss hoops, but know you never will be thin, therefore stay in your lane”
Yes, there are plenty of joy suckers, telling her the weight will pile back on once she starts eating normal food again, plus a few of the usual hard of reading, who assume she's eating bowls of pasta and packets of cookies and not meal replacement sachets.

Anyone see the thread where the OP has taken her reception age child, who suffers terrible travel sickness, to the cinema rather than make her go on a 2 hour coach journey to the beach for a school tip?
It's peak MNet.
One delightful comment read:

"You don't drive, you don't work, and you've haven't really done everything you possibly can to track down an effective remedy for travel sickness?
Sadly I think your child is destined to grow.up with a rather narrow life experience"

Then endless recommendations for anti sickness cures, almost all of which OP has already said they've tried.

But the majority of the thread was massively derailed by Soubriquet's admission that she's keeping her primary kids home from a school trip to a cathedral because what kid wants to go there? Three days on they're still lining up to put the boot in

I see your lasagna and chips and will counter with shepherds pie and chips.

My family have been shamed by your family's shepherds pie and chips! 😂

Nothing says Mumsnet like punching down. They're all soft little shiters. Probably the worst keyboard warriors I've ever come across in my 20+ year online.
