Has your mum considered starting a thread on MN about the shortbread issue? How horrific for her 😉 My husband is actually an electrician although he’s an engineer not domestic. The idea that he doesn’t have a work ethic and is thick is just ludicrous. He works a 70 hour week and (I know this would shock MN) went to college to get his qualifications.

He‘s also house trained and knows how to use a toilet appropriately.

My brother is a builder.

He knows straight away when a potential client is going to be an almighty pain in the arse and uses any number of excuses not to be dealing with them.

I suspect the MN posts above are from the type of people builders and other tradespeople run a mile from.

From my brother:

"30% are bleeping dreamers, 99% of whom are female and won't have a fraction of the budget needed for the amount of work they want done."

See? Mumsnetters to a tee.

Even if all tradesman were “thick” (which they aren’t), the average mumsnetter seems to think that lack of education = subhuman. Which is ironic considering the level of media literacy on that site😂 and the fact that absolutely none of them are 6 figure high flyer city banker husband high net worth Fortnum & Mason country estate dahhlings.

I know tradies who say the same, some will avoid dealing with those they know will be a pain in the arse, some give a big overpriced quote hoping to price themselves out of the job but with the safety net that if they do get booked they’ll get a bigger payday from it.

I don’t know how it is everywhere but here there’s such a shortage that tradies can be picky and just won’t bother with you if you’re difficult.

My plumber/boiler guy invoices like 2 weeks later for any work done and you pay then. I told him that’s more trusting than I would be and he says he gets so much work from clients he already knows or that get passed on by other tradesmen that he doesn’t have to bother with people he doesn’t trust to pay later.

Calling it now, “Claire” won’t make it and that when the donations will start being “coordinated” by one or two Mumsnetters

My husband says the “customers” that really get his back up are the ones who say to him “Which builder/plumber/electrician are you? I’ve got several coming today to give me quotes.”
They think it will make him give them a better price. It doesn’t.
As you said, he knows they’re going to be a pain in the arse so he prices higher so he doesn’t get the job or he doesn’t bother to send them a quote at all.
He’s not stupid, he knows people get several quotes so there’s no need to state it in the hope of a reduction.
He rarely does quotes now - most are regular customers who trust him or word of mouth.

When I have tradesmen I ask them the most important question when they arrive.
Tea or coffee? And how often?
Happy tradesmen do a better job.

We finally have the big reveal on what’s wrong with Claire…

If (!) she's a troll it's very boring
I think anyone who makes up a thread like this is probably very sad and lonely. They probably get a dopamine hit from all the replies wishing the imaginary daughter well, in the same way that other people get it from likes and comments on IG. I’d imagine that the OP either doesn’t have any children or family and she’s living out some sort of maladaptive daydream online or she’s no contact with any real children.

Doesn’t really excuse it and all the people replying are either rubberneckers or morons. The latter are the kind of idiots who send money to people on Twitter they’ve never met.
---
How old is Claire? I thought she was a child.
I’ve had a look at some of the OP’s other posts and apparently she’s lived in California for 40 years but is originally from Scotland which is where her daughter Claire lives. So I’m going to take a guess that ‘Claire’ is well into adulthood.

Going against the grain (see what I did there 🤣) but I am fed up my with local tradesman not turning up. Some of the replies on mumsnet that imply it’s the customers fault and no tradesman ever does anything wrong- I want to dramatically run on to the thread and shout about victim blaming. Then I remember it’s just about plumbers messing people around.

I do tea, biscuits, pay on return, don’t interfere, don’t try and knock quotes down but I still get Terry the tosser telling me his gran is ill/van broken/ nothing at all and not turning up.
