Mr Bates vs The Post Office - itv

Just listening to GB news that are talking to some of the people affected. Ministers are now meeting to discuss how to help convicted branch managers. The presenters (and me) are aghast that it's taken a television programme to get people talking and taking action. It truly is appalling.

i cant believe this has taken so long to be brought to justice. I remember my mum telling me about this when i was little. I'm now in my 40's so i knew about this. She is a guardian reader though! What annoys me is that they knew it was faulty. They knew something was wrong and still couldn't hold their hands up and say sorry. Its so upsetting. i havent been able to watch the drama as i know i'm going to find it too upsetting.

Also their compensation was minimal. Most of the money they got went on clearing the "debts' they already paid out and lawyer fees. Its awful. ;-(

I have been aware of the post office scandal for many years. Shamefully it has constantly been brushed under the carpet time and time again over the last 20 odd years this has been going on.

I am pleased that the ITV drama has pushed this case back into the limelight and that the government are now intervening. However this has still taken far too long to be resolved.

I have signed both petitions to strip Paula Vennells of her CBE. The woman clearly hasn't any sense of shame for her behaviour towards the sub post masters or any morals. She came in 2007 when it was at that point very well known of the issues that had been going on with Horizon. To accept a CBE in 2020 is utterly abhorrent.

As for Adam Crozier - i do not know why he is flying under the radar because he was the CEO of Royal Mail at the time . He is no longer at ITV - he stepped down in 2017 so its interesting that the ITV have neglected to mention him. Crozier may not hold a CBE however he does have an honorary doctorate which he should be stripped of.

@Chita - I am so sorry to learn that your friend has been affected by this awful crime.

ultimately - this all falls back on Fujitsu for a shoddy system. They also should be pushed into the limelight . I feel like they are also flying under the radar.

A lady I know locally was one of the postmasters and she lost everything. She was one of the test cases that went to court last year.
my husband was a postman for many years and had a problem with his mental health and alcoholism. He was moved offices from where he had been for over 20 years to our local office and that’s when his trouble started. He was treated terribly by his manager and he produced paperwork saying that my husband was aggressive to local postmasters when he was collecting the post and that they were frightened of him! Yes he did have an alcohol problem but always turned up for work did his job properly and was always nice to everyone. When my hubby spoke to that lady she said that was a downright lie on the post offices ( Royal Mail ) part. Luckily someone quite high up had started as a postman with my hubby and he stood up for him at the meetings. We begged the post office to help him with rehab but they weren’t interested. Eventually he was offered early medical retirement which he took. When he left after 33 years service he didn’t even get a card. but he is 17 years sober next month and leading a happy retirement .
So I don’t think it was only the postmasters they cheated. Hubby was quite upset watching the programme

Google Paula Vennells petition
And 2 come up.

One had 1000 signatures at the start of this week, it has been going for 3 years. It now has over 21000 signatures!!

Well done to your husband for beating his addiction and yet again appalling behaviour from the Post Office.

It’s all a complete mess. Why has it taken a TV show to get things moving? Why has that awful awful woman not just handed the CBE back already without making the work? Bad enough she accepted it in the first place but she will be lording it up with a nice big pension won’t she
I know, obviously great that the itv show has raised the profile of this but kind of sad that’s what it took to get people to listen. I had listened to the radio 4 thing way back and was aghast. But then again I have only just signed the petition, I think I had assumed was all in hand and getting sorted. Surely that horrid little pixie will have to rescind her cbe in the next few days, I am going to say come Friday she’ll admit defeat and strip herself of it. And if not fingers crossed she has it stripped from her.

And p.o went from £120m loss to making profit, makes you wonder if these siphoned funds boosted that figure. There was a sub-postmaster on the radio earlier. She said those that had topped up the takings with their own money to avoid shortfall (as declared by horizon system) were still waiting to got their money back to this day.

I read that Paula V has hired a very expemsive team of lawyers to fight her corner. She has all the advantages that her poor victims didn't lots of money and all the right contacts.

She can hire as many lawyers as she likes, but that won't change anything. She's done wrong, soooo many times, and caused a lot of unnecessary heartache and stress to far too many people, ignoring their plight. Why didn't she start a thorough investigation into Fujitsu? Why did she not believe the postmasters? She stands no chance in any court, top lawyers or not.
