I only just joined this forum in order to post here, and ironically enough wouldn’t have known about this thread without them talking about it in the life show!
But had to post after todays subscriber ep. I decided to subscribe a while back to give back as I’m a big fan, but the offering is just crap. Articles I wouldn’t read anyway as I find them quite poor and click bait-ey, and two 15 minute random chats a week. It’s not really enough to justify paying.
But today is the main reason I’m posting, it was the most egregiously awful subs episode ever. Mia defending billionaires and berating Emma who is her subordinate it was just absolutely foul. Mia got quite upset at the prospect that philanthropy is less beneficial than just paying your taxes in the first place.
As a very rich woman she was bratty and tone deaf and I felt very sorry for Emma as her employee.

They did, but Mia was vehemently disagreeing with it and defending Bezos. It was just the most arrogant and tone deaf I have ever heard her. Holly was stuck in the middle and seemingly trying to soften Mia’s views. Maybe it was just a pretend argument to make the (boring) episode a debate, but I found Mia’s views vile. Just as on Tuesday when she told people not to cry in front of their boss ‘because it just creates another problem for the boss’ and then talked about all the times she has cried at work herself.

Has she always been quite this out of touch?

Painful, wasn’t it? I feel like the new business model means Mia’s facade is cracking a bit.

I feel like she’s getting worse! And I feel like sometimes other co hosts aren’t allowed to have an opinion that differs from hers. She frequently talks over or buts in when others are talking.

When most of us were diagnosed with ADHD, we got medicated and with the increased self awareness, worked on some of our less desirable traits. Mia seems to have gone the Caroline Hirons route and is just behaving worse and worse and I’m sure if questioned she’d just say “ADHD made me do it”. I’m absolutely not advocating for masking, but you can’t use ND as an excuse for being an asshole.

There is certainly something very off with Mia and the hosts at MMOL. It’s been going this way for a least a year now and only Holly keeps it on an even keel. All the episodes this week have been awful and I can’t even get through half an ep now. It’s weird because I use to love it and very much look forward to it. Jesse is outrageously lacking self awareness and Mia just sounds ultra privileged. I am a high earner so I can’t even imagine how her ridiculous comments sound to people who are struggling with costs of living etc. I feel like they have lost touch with regular women and just have their “fans” (sycophants who attend their live performances) who they love because they never disagree.

Also I heard something that Mia said about taking a sabbatical from her marriage - maybe there is more going on behind the scenes?

What was the Bezos discussion- must have missed this one!

I think they need new hosts.. or at the very least, not all three of Mia, Jessie and Holly need to be on the pod every single episode. They’ve been doing it since 2016/17 (I think?)

They’re always bleating on about how tiring it is to make 5 episodes a week so why don’t they give some other women at Mamamia the chance to sit behind the mic? I’m sure there are many who would be amazing if they were given the chance. This is why talented people like Em Vernem and the Shameless girls leave businesses!

I think the quality of the episodes has definitely gone downhill. More does not equal better! I used to quite enjoy listening to them and liked many of the previous hosts like Monique and Sam and I lived Rachel Corbett. Didn’t particularly like Jesse to start with, she seemed very immature and everything was ‘problematic’. I still like Holly though, maybe cu more down to earth than the other two.
I started listening to the Shameless girls a few years ago and I love their podcasts, once a week from them is great, all their discussions are well researched and they are always respectful of each other’s different opinions.

Agree. In her ‘worst of the week’ a few weeks ago she discussed something that happened with Sally Hepworth. I think Mia was doing a little intro at the start of an event for her latest book. They had been out somewhere and Mia decided that she would go back to the office first to do a bit of extra work. Then ended up being late. She didn’t give herself enough time to get there, she didn’t really know where she was going, she couldn’t find a parking spot, then she got lost, something else happened, lost her phone? she got there just in time but she was very upset about letting Sally down . I think she had also lost her notes or had forgotten to write something in the first place. Of course the entire thing got blamed on her ADHD. If she has ADHD and her actions and behavior are making life difficult for friends and family she needs to do something. By the sounds of things, friends and family have always enabled her behavior. I think her husband does a lot of the life admin things and I think Luca took on a lot of responsibility for things to when he lived at home. I have two children with ADHD and you have to take steps to have a functioning life and not be in a constant state of chaos.

I posted exactly this a few weeks ago. I have gone off them completely and I can’t put my finger on why. But I would hang out for the episodes and now - same as you, lucky to get through a full episode.

I thought there might be something about this marriage sabbatical thing too.

And the medication helps sooooo much with getting your life back in order. Maybe she isn’t on meds or needs to up the dose, because unmedicated, yeah you could expect these things but medicated …. Not so much.
Also even when unmedicated I wouldn’t let important people down. I’d have a breakdown behind the scenes trying to get it done but I would get there in the end

I subscribed when they first offered it and it was very basic. I cancelled not long afterwards. If they put more effort into the subscriber content as they did advertising the subscriber content, then it might work a bit better. I can’t imagine anyone out there thinks it’s worth paying for?

I got dragged along to one of the live shows, and as I said previously, I did enjoy it. I did notice some tension with Lize Ratliff the producer. She was sitting with Mia’s children and family and Mia thanked “our wonderful producer ‘Em” who was doing the production side of things that day and Lize sat a few rows down waving her hands in the air in a really passive aggressive way. Which was signalling what about me. Someone next to her rubbed her shoulders to comfort her from being left out of the shout-out. Lize and Emma both went down on stage at the end but it was very awkward to witness and It gave off very unhappy workplace vibes

Sorry to hear this about Lize but I can't say I am surprised.

I can imagine there being a strange dynamic behind the scenes at MMOL. Mia and Jessie have an unconventional working relationship - as the CEO/founder, Mia is Jessie's boss. They have been working together as co-hosts for years, Jessie also works with her twin sister and now Mia is going to be Jessie's mother-in-law. I can imagine it's quite unprofessional behind the scenes which might make things tricky for the producers to have their input sometimes?

I can see how having such a close-knit, sometimes familial relationship would be beneficial for those who solely create one podcast (i.e. Shameless, Outspoken) but I can see how it could nurture a really unprofessional verging on toxic workplace within a larger company like Mamamia.
