Thread title by @Ablemabel, nominated by @Sideboard Bob. You each win an Odeon Unlimited pass for guest's local.

Recap: Rumour had it that guest had posted a friends-only Facebook message about being caught up in a lock-in at the cinema after violence erupted in Southend. The canal couldn't prove it, but last night, she began tweeting enthusiastically about all the movies she's been watching lately. Her recent favourites include Kneecap and Twisters, we suspect that Frozen and Smilla's Sense of Snow may also have been on the list. The canal questioned if she is, in fact, still locked in at the local Odeon or just has her sights on a wealthy Irish Republican cinephile. Guest would like you to know that she is the smollest pixie ever and needs a booster seat at the cinema.

Guest was also spotted at a local Labour Party event, sporting the infamous dress of "that's not my fanny" fame, together with some spectacular helmet hair. Mitherings from the past included guest's Pride playlist, Rhianna Pratchett's dogged support of her, and AI-written cookbooks (spoilers: guest will not be paid to promote one.)

Wiki up on the pink button!

Side note: I saw Twisters today and it really is very fun indeed. Glen Powell is a cowboy dreamboat. But I saw it because a friend recommended it, not a narc grifter liar.

Happy new thread canal!
EXACTLY!

From the previous thread - @pumbilical cord “Loads of shops on my road have closed in anticipation based on some online rumours. If she centres herself in any of this again I'm gonna be mad. So many local businesses run by immigrants and their kids down here. Otherwise it'd be a deserted wasteland of betting shops.”

The road Jacks favourite hat shop is on has a lot of shops boarded up as an immigration lawyers office just off that road is an apparent target. The Cliffs Pavillion has cancelled today’s shows. Lots of shops and the Citizen Advice office were advised to close early. Horrible. I’m sure she’ll managed to centre herself if something does happen. Always has done, always will do.

To be fair to her you do, IME, have to live in an incredibly both affluent and fortunate area to have a local independent cinema.

For most people it’s not a choice between supporting independent and chain, the independents are long gone and chain is all that’s left and it seems like that’s true for Southend. She can believe you should support independent where you can while also going to the Odeon cos chains are her only realistic choice, that’s not a gotcha or hypocritical of her when the nearest independent looks to be miles away.

it was the same way here when Cineworld were apparently the ones you should support - can totally agree with that in principle but nobody was travelling 20 miles to Bolton from where I am to support them.

I heard Jack was working secretly behind the scenes at CAB, eighty , no, 120 hour weeks, softly gently quietly stitching together advice on benefits - don't read the letter properly and make a tit of yourself on social media, energy prices - save ££££ by buying a lower voltage fridge etc.

Especially when so many of the "independent" cinemas are ultimately owned by one of the big companies, anyway - see the fake independent Picturehouse mini-chain in London which is now ultimately owned by the same people as Cineworld, only with worse (much worse) pay & conditions for their staff.

Saying that, I grew up down the road from the magnificent Strand in Belfast, and then spent several years living beside the Hyde Park Picture House in Leeds - both were cheap and brilliant, and are owned and operated by charities. So if you're lucky enough to have one nearby, do use them!

Don’t forget to help yourself manage your energy budget by cancelling your direct debits 🤯

I also live close to an independent cinema in a pretty run down area that has been brilliantly managed by local people and is loved & very well supported. Echo @Lucky Escape, use them if you have them!

We have an independent in the town here but it doesn’t show modern films, it shows events (eg Eurovision) and some old classics so in a different niche to Odeon, Backlot and co.

There is a lovely independent now in the posh seaside town down the coast (ironically the same one where the nearest TT food bank is) and I have been, it’s actually far cheaper than the chains but would take the best part of an hour to get to from here on public transport (with the most sensible route requiring a tram and bus ie two tickets) so I understand it’s not realistic for everyone to make the journey much as they may want to support independent where they can. Seems to be the same case for Southend too (tho their nearest independent isn’t in a posh seaside town!)

We have the Lexi cinema a bus ride away and it's genuinely independent. I saw 'Belfast' surrounded by lots of Norn Irish older women, which just added to the atmosphere, personally. Will hopefully see 'Kneecap' there once it's on.

I may have to expand my repertoire to more than films based in Ireland though 😂
