She wasn't famous, I think that person was assuming she would be in the future?

She was clearly desperate to BE famous, though. A couple of examples:

Here she is wanking over getting Star Letter in the local paper: https://web.archive.org/web/2013020...edjack.com/2012/03/22/making-headlines-again/

(shades of my dad having an email read out on the radio and talking about it for weeks)

Here she is opening a blog post with "I am reluctant to use the term living in the public eye" (she had had her blog for 2 months at this point): https://web.archive.org/web/2013020...-whistlestop-tour-of-how-to-fk-up-everything/

Here she is accusing another Southend political type of plagiarism: https://web.archive.org/web/2012072...2/07/20/is-it-me-or-is-there-an-echo-in-here/

From what I can gather, she started out by showing up to every Southend council meeting and befriending all the other hacks involved with local politics. Those people tend to have an exaggerated sense of their own importance, so they probably all considered themselves Southend VIPs? At first she was only focused on local politics, hence the original blog name (Our Southend). This is why so much of the first year of archives is such a slog to get through. There is NOTHING as dull as local politics. Nothing.

God I'm hardly the world's most exciting person but her life must be SO. DULL.

Like why tf was she giving out signed photos at a sale that was meant to clear rent arrears etc. One would surely think the ulterior motive was therefore actually something far far different...
The fact that she was making up posters, contacting radio and press - this was the inception of the character of Jack Monroe. Like who sells all their tit like it’s a festival? And ‘A Girl Called Jack’ all over everything, like she’s building this persona.

I genuinely believe I was way more skint than she was in 2011. Truly. I also had no choice but to live within my means and the only ones who got anything nice for themselves were my (at the time) babies. They went everywhere, had nice things, nice treats and food - they were warm and not pimped out to tabloids. They also were all piled in with me in a 1 bed flat, with 😱no sea view!

That's actually fascinating. So was she trying for politics/journalism before the poverty then? I thought it was the other way round

I think Jack rounds up and exaggerates numbers a lot. In Jack's head, £266 is the rate and it rounds up to £300 so she pays £300 even if it's actually only £200. My opinion is she does this in all areas of her life eg she may have several £0000's of savings in her SAVINGS account but in her current account she only has £19 therefore for the purposes of Twitter she only has £19.

What also interests me about the FB sale is why local press were there in the first place. I know local press report on kittens up a tree etc etc but even so, surely a house sale in not newsworthy unless she was already a big cheese / attention seeker locally? I've said before that I suspect her dad was a bit of a 'self made' (ha) bit cheese / legend in his own lunchtime locally, and so maybe she took on that mantle or created it herself?

She was known to the papers for quite a few reasons. For a start Big Dave is often a “local resident” spokesperson commenting on various articles. His name is regularly featured in the press. They featured Jack and her friend’s charity handcuffs challenge when Jack was 14. So not only is she known to them, but Jack probably had the know-how of how to get yourself in the papers, because her dad certainly does.

The house sale was only a couple of weeks after Hunger Hurts bullshit, which had made a big impression and led to a lot of media appearances. Her blog had been going since March, 5 months before.

She would attend local council meetings, and would often be the only non-politics person there aside from the local paper’s journalist, another connection. She would often get her letters about politics published on the letters page of the paper. Despite her claims to be all alone, she was well-connected and a Labour Party volunteer, as well as volunteering for a voluntary organisation.

I think her house sale was a well-advertised money-making event rather than the actions of a desperate starving mother.
