Friends, I confess that in the days I was hardened, paid-up squiggle, I did try using tea in place of red wine... it didn't work for me.

(Not quite as disastrous as the time I was following the recipe for an Iranian vegetable stew which called for a pinch of fresh ground coffee. I didn't have any to hand so supplanted it with a dash of Nescafe Goldblend. It tasted very much as you'd expect).

Golden drops make me think of urine.

I made pudding yesterday. In a bowl I chucked softened butter (been sat out all day as I had it on my toast in the morning), sugar, eggs flour and a teaspoon of ground ginger, a few tablespoons of milk. I Beat all together until smooth. In another oven proof bowl I poured in some golden syrup. Chucked the sponge mix on top and put in the oven to bake. Served with custard.

That took longer to write than to make, and was delicious. No packet mix, no going to the shop

And that is a recipe that is easy to follow, concise ingredients list, and descriptive enough to make me want to try it.

No talk about your friend with a "similar maverick brain" who "chortled" at your suggestion of a cake recipe, whilst putting up your shelves.

Leaden rock and low-and-slow softy soft slop represent the duality of her cooking. On the odd occasion she does the impossible and manages to make something that is both sloppy and dry, it's truly a talent. Love that a few hours ago she claimed to be all about the arse ends of veg to make her own stock and now has claimed that veg stock is insipid. That must be a record turnaround.
