Eurovision Song Contest 2021 #2

I said earlier in the thread that being one of the big 5 does us no favours, but the reality is that the BBC don't even offer the British public any choice in what we send to Eurovision anymore. At least we used to be able to choose between 6 songs. Their dictatorship is totally outrageous. They choose badly on our behalf every year.

We need to stop paying our way in with subpar songs and average artists. If we weren't part of the big 5 we would have to up our standards to qualify.

I find the left and right of the arguments so silly. What I saw last night on twitter gave me a migraine haha. Those with EU flags on their profiles moaning about how this is why we are hated by Europe. Then on the flip side you get the idiots on the right like Tom Harwood and others tweeting hyperbolic statements like this. I've no idea if they are being serious, but these people seem to tweet without a thought of what they are tweeting. It is one of the biggest reasons I cannot stand social media, more so twitter.
That Harwood bloke is a complete twit

Just put the UK entry on for my kids to gauge their reaction. "This is rubbish Mummy!".

For me, hearing it again without the alcohol, it sounded even worse! Had he even rehearsed? How was he so out of breath? Embarrassing.

Thought I'd show the kids the top 3:

France - "didn't like it"
Switzerland - "kind of liked it"
Italy - "I LOVE THIS"

Ahhhh I've taught them well 😍😍

this is my thought - it was a very normal song we’d hear all the time here. Not Eurovision or cheesy enough!
I just don't think it will make a difference. We've tried it all. The kitsch and Eurovisiony (Scooch), boring girl ballads, boring female ballads, the gimmicky staging (Electro Velvet), the rehashed boyband, the Shakira/middle-eastern vibe popular with Eurovision (Javine), we've even thrown Andrew Lloyd Webber at it. Last night's song was just cringe. Su-Rie was about the best we've had in recent years. We are pretty much a pariah in Eurovision at this point.

But when Andrew Lloyd Webber was involved we came 5th which was our best position since we last won in 1997. But as you say it’s hard to know what gimmick or music genre is going to win over the public and jury in any given year

I used to think the only way we'd get anywhere was to get a massively successful artist to do it. I'm talking Adele level, not Blue. But now I don't even think that would work. I think for a variety of reasons we are simply disliked (don't know if that's the right word) too much. Similarly Spain, where the public still select their entry, have consistently finished below 20th position at almost every Eurovision this century. The highest they've finished in the last 10 years is 10th, and they've tried all the same tactics that we have. There's a similar feeling there about pulling their funding.

How does the funding work? Does everyone contribute and we just contribute a lot more?

Everyone who enters should contribute the same and all take part in the qualifying rounds. To contribute so much and still end up at the bottom every year, the rest of Europe is just taking the piss. Italy dropped out for a few years a little while ago and came back a lot stronger.
