Years and years ago I watched a documentary about Katie and Eilish Holton. They were Siamese twins living in Ireland. When they were 3 they were separated and Katie passed away. I remember sobbing that she'd passed away. I think I was around 8 or 9 at the time but I still think and wonder how Eilish is getting on.

I remember this one, and I’ve never forgotten their names. I was just a kid too.

A really heart wrenching documentary I saw in 2015/6 I think was called Body Donors? It followed the lives of terminally ill people who are planning to donate their bodies to science when they die. It really struck a chord with me as one of the ladies was the same age as my mum at the time, she had a party to celebrate her life before she passed away from cancer and her whole family had to come to terms with the fact that her body would be used for research. Obviously each of the people featured eventually passed away and it showed what happened to their bodies afterwards, I sobbed like a baby and it’s stayed with me for years.
We got shown this documentary when we were in medical school! Was really eye opening and I think helped to remind everyone that the bodies we were dissecting were actually real people who’d had real lives.
we had a funeral service for the donors when they were cremated, and some of the family came along too, which must have been a bit strange for them as their loved one had actually died a couple of years previously, but must have been a way of getting final closure.

Oh wow, that must have been so intense! I wonder if the ‘fear’ attached to body donation is more to do with families worrying that their loved one won’t be remembered/respected in a traditional way once they have passed away. I love that these people have been treated with such warmth and respect, I truly hope their families feel the same way!

I would give away all my organs in a heartbeat when I die but I read a really interesting book called Unnatural Causes and it said some organ donations get used to practice cosmetic surgery on 😁 so your nose could be used as practice for nose jobs. I still will donate my organs but would rather think they went to a more worthy cause!
Unnatural causes is such a good book!! So many interesting cases in there.

interestingly, I always said that I’d donate my body to science, but once I started med school, I changed my opinion.
as respectful as we were, we were still a class of (mostly) hungover 18 year old students (due to bad timing with our anatomy classes and discount club nights). I learned a lot in dissection, but I am not convinced that I would decide to give up my own body to that cause. I would much rather donate my organs, but as I have learned through working in ICU, there are quite a few criteria to meet, and sadly, a lot of people don’t meet the criteria to donate organs.

it’s certainly a whole new part of medicine that I wasn’t aware of as a student, and it’s a shame that there’s more more information out there for the general public!

Some of these things werent included in the actual documentary, but after the recent Channel 4 Michael Barrymore documentary I looked up some facts.

That poor Stuart Lubbock had been violated the a door handle, but also that device from the pool. The device was missing but it showed what it would have looked like, and what that poor man must have endured is heartbreaking. It wasn't just a smooth piece of plastic.

They had to leave this out of the documentary because it was too graphic, but apparently a piece of Stuart Lubbock's anatomy had been so badly treated that it was dilated to the size of an orange or grapefruit. It's unthinkable.

Barrymore is guilty as sin and it's disgusting that he was given a chance on CBB and DoI. He visited a doctor about a problem with his penis just a few days later.

I really think organ donation should be opt out rather than opt in, as it is in Spain. I think a lot of people probably would give organs but never get round to registering. I would personally give anything away tbh, I saw a really interesting documentary years ago about people getting donor organs and developing character traits of the donors, so crazy!

it is isn't it?

I remember watching a BBC documentary called Simon’s Choice about Simon Binner who had Motor Neurone Disease. It showed his journey deciding that he wanted to travel to Switzerland to end his life as he couldn’t face his battle any longer. It was heartbreaking seeing his health decline - losing his mobility, his speech, his writing ability etc. I can still vividly remember him saying goodbye to his friends and family for the last time as he went through airport security on his way to Switzerland. It showed the entire journey with such dignity but it was so incredibly sad.

Not sure if it has been mentioned already but I watched Dear Zachary on YouTube a few years ago and I still think about it at least once a week. Such a harrowing story. A dad was killed so his friends made a documentary for his very young son Zachary about his dad for him to keep but it ends up turning into an awful story. Be prepared with tissues and don’t google the story beforehand!!

Oh gosh, yes 100% recommend Dear Zachary (and going into it blind) out of the hundreds of documentaries I’ve seen it would be the top 1 because of how heart wrenching it is. I still think of Kate and David Bagsby often. They were too pure for this cruel world 😢

Has anyone ever read about or seen the documentary 'Zoo'? I heard about it, would never see it but just the explanation of what it was about made me want to vomit.

It involves a man and a horse. The man died of his injuries, but his videos ended up on the internet. I think the documentary follows similar minded sick fucks.

I would never watch it but reading on Wikipedia reveals the man had a wife and son, and a decent job. He didn't seem medical attention because he was worried about the impact it would have on his job.

I mind my pal putting Dear Zachary on whilst we were on a comedown and needless to say it was a horrific choice.

It's a good documentary, but it is a punch.

Also Zoo is good in the sense that beastiality is so bad and prolific and unknown but christ for the most of us it's sickening.

That’s terrible the poor horse :(

Far from heart-wrenching, one that lives in my head rent free is a Channel 4 documentary called 'More Sex Please, We're British' - all about LoveHoney, the online sex toy retailers 😂 I still tell folk about one of the anecdotes in it from the woman who reviewed the site's user-submitted photos of the lingerie: there was one set featuring a woman who was absolutely stunning, all dressed up to the nines in nothing but stockings and lace... and in the mirror in the background, you could clearly see some bloke intently watching the snooker instead 😅

Plus the genuinely line "Oh, there goes Doris with a trolley full of dildos" still makes howl as much as it did when I was about 14 🤣

I remember the video of that going around while I was at school, I’m pretty sure it was called Mr Hands. I just read about the case on google and it’s pretty grim.
