Discontent #14 food, energy, transport, cost of living, society etc

Does anyone have any recommendations for a heated throw? My cat has her second UTI and the only thing I've changed is letting the dog upstairs as I want to sit in my bed where it's warmer before upstairs I only allowed the cats so going to go back to doing that again
Lidl have Silentnight heated throws for £25 atm! We have one of them, but I prefer the Dreamland one for our cats - we bought one when they were on offer for about £65 I think. They have a 9 hour timer, so you can leave it on all day/night.

Our cats love heated throws, they practically melt into it ☺ I hope your moggy feels better soon ❤

For my cats I actually have a heated mat from Amazon. It's like a mini electric blanket and it works for them, have had it for ages now. It's quite good as it has a removable cover you can easy wash. Pretty sure I bought it for 10 or 15 quid

It's for me not the cat 😅 it's just I started to take the dog upstairs as I am cold and want to sit in bed where it's warmer. The cat doesn't like the dog being upstairs as that was a cat only area before so she's stressed that the dogs going up there. So want a heated blanket for the sofa so I'll just start allowing the dog downstairs again where I'll stay with him

Ohhh whoops my bad! 😂 We originally bought the heated throws for us as well, but they quickly became the cats’ throws. They’re pretty cheap to run so we leave one on all day. They allow us to get under them in the evening though 😅

I hope it helps keep the peace between them and reduces your cat’s stress levels 🙂

I'd heard prices had risen but still shocked when I bought the big jar of Nescafé instant coffee yesterday, the highest I've ever known £9
I've noticed Sainsbury's keep sticking the Nescafe coffee on Nectar price deal to mask the cost a bit, it's been so regular that I stock up when it's on the nectar price because otherwise it is too expensive. I heard Typhoo tea might be going bust? This might happen to coffee brands if people can't afford to buy the branded stuff anymore.

I go through a kilo bag of coffee beans a month. The one I buy has gone from about £18 to £22 the last year or so. I could get cheaper but it's my luxury to myself.

I do have several coffee plants but no chance I will be able to grow beans. Not enough space and wrong conditions.

same here - about a kilo of coffee beans a month. I like Lavazza coffee best and got a 1kg bag of 10€ yesterday, which is a great deal, it's normally 15€. I have tried cheaper own-brand beans but so far am sticking with the branded stuff. I've always tried to buy on offer though, since it keeps and is easy to store I just always try to buy a bag or two when I can get a deal.

Nescafe azera, kenco millicanco and the costa ones are always on offer in sainsburys, tesco, waitrose etc. They were before prices went up too, I always grab a few

Has anyone got/researched heat pumps? I’ve always heard good things about them, but was really surprised to see how non inasive the install looks (this was RTed by Octopus). I’d be interested to know how it looks inside a house tho, imagine that’s a nightmare ngl

It's probably an air to water heat pump so the inside is only normal radiators and it can't be used for AC.

I want to see in 10 years time reviews of these things and how it worked out financially. Many of these things only just break even if they don't have costly repairs with huge gov subsidies.

My parents have one in their flat ( they had no choice, the developers were made to put them in). Everyone’s stopped worked last weekend in the storm when the wind came from a certain direction and was really cold so my parents (mid 70s) and everyone else in the block were freezing.

I’m not really sure they are convinced tbh. They’ve lived in houses with storage heaters, combis and normal boilers and this seems to not really keep them that warm when it needs to (ie my mum isn’t that well and needs to be warm). They are all for green tech and were championing it a few years ago but it just doesn’t seem to have delivered on its promise.

If your house is not insulated to within an inch of its life, don't bother. We put one in the new village hall when it was built in 2021, which is about the size of a large 4-bed family home, and it goes through about £200 a month in summer and anything up to four times that in winter. That's with the hall being used a couple of times a week and left at 14C the rest of the time. Also faces east, so the main hall is mostly heated up by the sun in the mornings if there's no cloud, through 2 sets of fully glazed double doors.

This might be the best thread for this, obesity in the G7.

Frances strategy to make fat shaming a sport has actually really reduced the rates, but at what cost? Meanwhile the US is on its way to half being obese in a few years. No chance of a reforming that most food is barely passable as food as it's people's choice. 🙄

Food's one factor, but lack of exercise and pure laziness is another. Too many people just hop in the car for even the shortest of distances. Near me is a parade of shops and one Sunday morning on my way there I was passing a house where a lady in her 30s/40s was leaving and she jumped into her car. Turns out we were heading to the same place because just as I was about to enter the Coop she pulled into the car park. The distance from her house to there was only 400 yards and I had beaten her. And we left the shop at the same time and I beat her home as well. Lazy fucker 😆

Given how often I see Ubereats drivers in the Supermarket, Costa etc, she's still ahead of those lazy fuckers that don't even get off the sofa.

I went to a show last night and in the interval I commented to my husband about the size of a lot of people there. It was around 1/3 if not more of people overweight or obese. You can blame health issues for a tiny minority but the rest……?
