Doesn’t sound like from PMQ that Boris is looking to having a circuit breaker. Just more crap in the press.

Even if he was he wouldn’t admit it yet having just brought in the 3 tier system. If the figures over the next week keep increasing across the U.K I can see him doing it but he’ll probably call it something different 🙈

Andy Burnham doing a press conference on sky news getting the statistics out like “next slide please”

Chris Whitty better watch out 😂

Apparently someone has ordered Whitty a clicker 😂

Noooo it's the best bit of the briefing. There's always a fun sponge ruining it for others 😂

I'm worried about both the economy and coronavirus. I had a friend end a friendship with me over this. She said I care more about money than health and never wants to speak to me again.

Just because I'm worried about money doesn't make me a monster. I lost my home because of coronavirus. I lost everything. Of course, I'm grateful that I have my health but it still so hard.

This maybe unpopular... I feel like you can be worried about both but worry about one over the other without being a monster. People get so arsey when anyone mentions the economy and I know the bigger picture health should be more important.

However,

There is always going to be a part of you that worries for your own needs and how it applies to you. I always feel selfish for feeling like we need to protect the economy, as people are dying which is obviously horrific and people have lost loved ones, but by the same token, if it will take 20 years to financially recover from this i will be 44. I'm a year away from finishing my degree which should lead me into my dream career and I've always wanted children. I'm effectively at the start of my life right now which let's face it, will be greatly impacted by covid for potentially the next 20 years.

the bigger picture in terms of health and people dying yes that is minor, but to me it isn't minor.

Bit of a ramble but here we go...

I think the thing about the economy vs lives is a false dichotomy.

Countries that have gone hard on the saving lives side have overall had a better economy as a result (S. Korea, China, NZ) and those that have gone fully for either accepting deaths or not shutting things down have done worse economically. (I appreciate this isn’t as black and white as this) It seems from that there’s an obvious thing to do but I’m not sure people yet generally realise that we’re facing a lose-lose situation either way.

I constantly flip flop myself on this but I think there’s something to be said for the argument “without people there is no economy” and by extension people not dying or having long Covid and thus being able to work and contribute to the economy.

I do wonder if we should’ve gone for the elimination strategy like NZ or Aus, because this halfway house isn’t serving anyone.

Also it’s unrealistic for there to be no negative or just minimal consequences from this. And I think that naturally people want to minimise it but I don’t really see how that’s possible. People will die/lose jobs/businesses/see a steep rise in mental illness/have children’s education impacted etc etc

We can see just from this thread how a variety of people are being effected and it’s heartbreaking to read I’m sure for everyone. No one is coming out unscathed and it isn’t fair on anybody, that much is clear.

Wales have announced they will be stopping English tourists from entering the country from Friday! Presume this is to stop all the Scousers flooding the caravan parks on the North Wales coast.
It is only fair they do this, my relatives all live on the north wales coast and they can't even move across neighbourhoods, it is a slap in the face if english people can travel there

There is such an attitude of entitlement from a lot of English tourists and their attitude on social media has been disgraceful and actually borderline racist. You have to wonder why they come in the first place?

I don’t agree with the strategy of NZ or Aus. Trapping your citizens seems inhumane. Are they trapping them forever? Because if not surely the virus will come back, even with a vaccine 🤷🏻‍♀️

It does seem dull that the majority of wales is in local lockdown. my family can't go to the toursit areas 40 minutes from their house as it's outside their area but people from england can come and holiday in the area? baffling.

Stacey Solomon went to wales last week for a holiday and went to a local waterfall okay but my family can't go visit that same waterfall cause it's outside their town depsite that it's literally 30 minutes drive away.

totally agree, I am English, have never lived in Wales, but the sense of entitlement here in terms of breaking rules etc is insane compared to what I have heard (from my relatives) of what is happening in Wales. Both Wales and Scotland seem to be doing much better tbh

Also has anyone seen that they are filming "I'm a celebrity.." in a castle in Abergele (north wales) technically this must be totally illegal?

I think I would put up with this if it meant not endless lockdowns like here tbh, better "locked" in your country than just your house

I was wondering that but I think it's allowed cause it's for work. You can leave the area of your local lockdown if it's for work purposes.

Thing is in order for this to work long term, we sort of need the whole world to agree to do it for 4 weeks or so and completely co ordinate. It’s just not feasible.

Whilst those countries are fine at the moment, they are beholden to the rest of the world sorting their shit out or never allowing travel in or out (certainly not as it was.) Even if they are waiting for a vaccine, their general population will have no immunity (I know ours is low at around 5% but it’s better than nothing at all

If we in the UK take the words of the lead on the vaccine that actually less than 50% of the population will get the vaccine (elderly and clinically vulnerable people) then the rest of us will be subject to catching it and potentially passing it on to those countries.

I actually would prefer the short sharp lockdown like you say where we all don’t do anything for weeks but it will never work long term unless every country were able to partake or we did stop all travel for a long time outside the UK.
