Caroline Hirons #37 The Devil Wears Camo

I’m so sick of this hatred of ageing. Ageing is a privilege. I’ve lost four friends to cancer this year. They would gladly have lived a bit longer with wrinkles and grey hair.
I’m sure I’ve read her musings in the past on ‘ageing is a privilege’ and her agreeing with that sentiment.

I’ve got two working arms, two working legs , can see and don’t have a disease to contend with , I consider that a privilege as I settle into my middle 50’s.

Vanity is such a downer.

The whole idea of 'avoiding the signs of ageing' is sales generating crap.

What are the signs of ageing?

Because it's only ageing skin which seems to be demonised, not other 'signs of ageing' like wearing glasses, hair growing out of your ears, wiry eyebrows, not being able to get a get a strong erection, overall your body getting stiffer, getting up in the night to pee, toenails getting thicker, growing big ears and noses...all of these and other 'signs of ageing' are ignored.

Only female facial skin is the focus of 'signs of ageing'. We're all trained to only think of that when we hear the phrase.

Even when she recommends sunscreen, it's just for the face. No mention of hairline, ears, hands, calves (unless you wear trousers), feet etc. We're not exhorted to 'protect any bit of skin which sees daylight' when she's banging on about sunscreen - always the face, and only the face.

It's a stupid position to take, because everyone gets old. Unless you intend to do yourself in at 30, in which case there are better ways to spend your limited time than worrying that some unspecified, imaginary person might think you are 'old'.

And at the same time, we're also told to ignore these unspecified, imaginary people who might judge us for being flamboyant/different/gay, etc etc.

But somehow, we MUST concern ourselves with what they think when it comes to female facial ageing...

I know the conversation has moved on, but I still can't get over the daftness of Emma Guns comparing what she and CH would get for their clothes on Vinted with what Trinny who had been on TV as a fashion advisor for nearly 30 years, had at one point with Susannah been a huge primetime TV personality (they'd appeared together on Parkinson the night of his infamous Meg Ryan interview) and had sold multiple best selling fashion books, would make from her clothes. I have met Trinny & know I'd be lucky to squeeze my big toe into her outfits, but I can see that her wardrobe would be far more desirable than CH's butch camo one

Omg her and Sali over fecking sandwiches.

Sali 'Love. Love me a bloody sandwich. Love'
Oaf shouting 'anyone who says they don't like sandwiches is a bleeping LIAR. All these ones saying they like poncey food instead of sandwiches are LIARS'.
Sali 'yes you talked about sandwiches for 15 minutes yesterday' as Oaf rolls around in glee pointing at her team sycophanticly guffawing 'oh don't say that Sal - these ones know what I'm like. You lot know what I'm like don't you?'

£35k is overpaid, given the 'demands' of the job. And let's not forget the perks are beauty and hair treatments and products all completely free (a big saving on anyone's budget), plus all the free product you could ever want, which you are free to quietly resell at your leisure for cash. Plus the odd overseas trip, dinner, clothing and accessories (all you've got to do is unpick the the monogramming...). I'd estimate the actual salary plus benefits is probably around £50k plus.

Not bad for rehashing press releases!

Lol

I think Emma Guns point was that Trinny selling her clothes made money because she had the means to invest in her wardrobe in the first place as she was relatively wealthy - I don’t think she was suggesting hers or Hirons clothes should fetch the same amount.

I’m not defending that point by the way. I don’t think wealth has anything to do with success here. Trinny’s brand, vision and products are just superior. And she’s an infinitely more likeable character.

She probably was making that point, which still doesn't make sense because all of them get the expensive stuff for free. We have to pay for it. You just need to be an influencer/influential to not have to pay for anything. Hirons and headphones for example....

ETA to try to fix quote but I just made it worse!

They both really take the most random normal things and then try to give them a dusting of #RebelHeart cool girl bullshit and try to make out they're renegades 🙄

Ohhh, you like sandwiches? And Christmas with the fam? WOW! Such daring, craaaaazeeeee subcultural choices! 🤪 😵

My lasting memory of Sali was in a YouTube video with Nadine in the series on Nadine's channel where she asked various women (mostly women i hadn't heard of) for their top 10 beauty products. Her very first one was announced with "it's sugar crush, mate!". It was so forced.

Just pure misogyny. Men get to be distinguished, we get to be old bags.

@skincaresceptic I couldn't agree more. Over the last few years I've lost my wife and two friends to cancer. Another friend has had major surgery and further treatment for lung and breast cancers and her mental health has suffered hugely as a result. I had gastroscopy and colonoscopy yesterday and am due a CT scan on Christmas Eve. I couldn't give a toss about looking my age right now. I hope to grow old, enjoy friendships, work, hobbies and family and on my deathbed you can bet I won't be worrying about wrinkles.

That’s a lot to deal with.
I knew about your wife but I didn’t realise you were going through so many health issues yourself. I hope the tests come back clear for you. It must be so tough for you right now, I cannot even imagine. “Take care” seems so naff and meaningless but it is heartfelt. 😘

Slight merail but relevant to any discussion of the tyranny of beauty. My mum had a major stroke last year and one of the most upsetting things about it has been hearing her berate herself for no longer being 'pretty', 'in good nick', 'great for her age' etc. One side of her body is barely working but her hair must still be blow dried and the makeup put on no matter how bone tired and exhausted she is. She's avoided events where she'd see ppl she hasn't seen in a while cos she 'can't be bothered explaining' when we know it's really because she doesn’t like her new physicality and doesn’t want to be seen. I absolutely blame this on the absorption of 70 years of messaging on what a womans worth is based on.

Love to @FINIFUS and @skincaresceptic

Thank you so much. I'm not worrying myself too much over it. No point meeting trouble half way, eh? The report from colonoscopy suggested what they removed was suspicious for pre-cancerous polyps but won't know until it's been tested. I'd be fine if that was the result! Also did biopsy for coeliac disease. Just CT to go. I'm grateful to the NHS for being so thorough.

Sending you all my love and hope everything is ok for you. Xxxx

Ok, she sometimes gives too much leeway to CH, but she's as trustworthy as anyone in the industry can likely be. Short story shorter: Skin Rocks can go kick rocks.

Any chance you could post Nadine’s recommendations on here please?
I think Nadine tolerates her until Hirons gives her a reason not to.
A bit like Trinny tolerated Hirons until Hirons couldn’t hide her envy any longer and went into full on “damage their reputation” narc mode.
