But this argument is exactly the same one serious child abusers make - that they felt 'connected' to the child they had befriended. It's disgusting. If you are an exceptionally wealthy and privileged and intelligent man and you feel disconnected and uncomfortable in the world then you take action and deal with the issue accordingly. Not re empower yourself and pump up your ego by predating on the weak and vulnerable. That's literally the mechanism of abuse.

I thought we were talking about people with low mental health/dips logging onto tattle.

Sorry, I think there's some crossed wires @Dr.CM

I am not here to defend abusers.

I honestly don't know how anyone survives doing the job and I admire that you worked so hard trying to get justice for victims but I can't begin to imagine how one just gets along with daily life after knowing what's going on :(
You don't. My son was born 7 months after started doing that. Never did baths, was always uncomfortable changing nappies, and used to be very "get something on!!!" To him as a child and to my partner about him. He is 13 now and well pee'd off I have his phone, Switch locked.down, online gaming only with verified friends etc.

The problem I had was as he became a more "popular age" was.seeing images of kiids with similar t shirts and toys. That is i when you realise it's affecting you. If he'd been 13 when I started, I would have been much more OK.

For all those still thinking this is no big deal. Imagine having to go to your job as a young member of staff, carry out your duties (on probably not a great salary) all while you‘re having to put up with inappropriate messages from a much older and very powerful man in that workplace.

My heart goes out to those young staff, it must have been hell for them. And what about their mental health? They clearly didn’t think they could tell anyone at the BBC, unless of course they did and it was brushed under the carpet yet again. I hope to god they had someone to confide in.

I actually feel tearful and angry at the same time just thinking about them because we’ve all been young once and some Tattlers still are. To me that would have been a very intimidating/frighting/traumatic experience.

Perhaps before anyone decides to kick off at my post, think would it be okay if someone were doing that to you, or even worse a young loved one of yours, it certainly wouldn’t be okay with me. So maybe while you have sympathy for Mr Edwards, spare a thought for those young staff who weren’t treated with respect. They deserved so much better from the BBC and Huw Edwards!

If you think the Sun are scum, I don’t know what that makes the BBC!

I cant edit my earlier post, but what it should have said is

Info from a friend in the industry:
Porn is made with the adult consent of all involved. Children cannot give such consent and making images of children is a criminal act. Barely Legal is a sub-genre where adults who appear to be underage play child/teen roles.

IIOC is a category of illegal images completely separate to the porn industry and includes all children under 18.

Thanks @Dr.CM for the heads-up

I didn't mean for this to turn into a discussion on what might be wrong with the phrasing, just from my (Irish) perspective it was an automatic "CP, get him, if the sender was 17"... not a full nuanced discussion on inappropriate imagery etc. That's my lack of knowledge on UK laws, terms etc. emerging here and hands up for that but it should surely go without saying (and I'm referring to other comments here that there is a glaringly obvious difference between CP and actual adult made porn, it's so obvious it's almost insulting that it needed to be mentioned.

Phrase is still in use in Ireland, motions to change it had been discussed

If the BBC had dealt with it properly internally it may not have even reached the media. Although these things have a way of getting out.
I’m sure that the guy’s parents gave all of the information to the scum for nothing and haven’t made a penny. 👍🏻🙄
The judgements about mental health show that we are still stuck in the dark ages. People with depression don’t walk around crying or clutching their head in the corner as represented in the media. They are the nurse or the cashier in the supermarket or the advisor on the phone in the call centre.
Nobody is immune and those who are judging have clearly never wanted to go to bed and never wake up.

Actually no I think people say I have poor mental health for normal life stressors and experiences. I'm grateful for some of the stigma going but it hasn't for SMI like schizophrenia and type 1 bipolar. My maternal side of the family are frequent inpatients and I worry all the time. SMI rips families there's also a worry it will activate in you because of genetics. I'm pushing 30 so its likely it won't. I'm always worrying my family members have taken their meds and aren't in vulnerable situations.

I've had very serious depression on and off since around 12 but luckily I've always had a grip on reality and never developed psychosis. I feel like the mental health promotion is just for palatable illnesses.

You'd think that would be a formality. Can not believe that it is legally and officially called that.

All the best to you👍

I'm just wondering why the Mother of the first young man, felt the need to tell her story to The Sun - the lowest, scummiest rag that ever existed. Did she have no faith in our legal system?
There is a part of me that believes that Murdoch was hoping this scandal would further damage the reputation of the BBC. It seems to have backfired massively.
I feel no sense of relief about yesterday evening's revelations, just a sense of sadness. Sadness for all the lives tainted by this sordid episode.

She went to The police in April who said nothing criminal. She then went to BBC in May, who did nothing. She simply wanted HE to stop sending money to her son. So she went to The Sun. Whilst I may agree with you about the Sun, they are the biggest UK selling paper.

Depends on the context of inappropriate and as far as I am aware there has not been any evidence of this.
If its sexual in nature then yes its inappropriate but if staff simply not liking views he shared in his emails or the language he used when he made his displeasure known its very subjective.

I would also like to say if that happened to one of my children as a young staff member, I’d have gone to the Sun, in fact ALL the Newspapers, along with any TV station that wanted the story, to make sure that person was never in that position to be able to do that again!!!

And I would have asked for a fee to be given directly to charities very close to my heart.
