Americas Sweethearts - netflix

Just finished the series. Was interesting and infuriating in equal measure. The whole thing is so stuck in the past- women dressed in little hot pants shaking their arses for the male gaze while the men do the real work on the pitch. The women are paid duck all and must fit into teeny weeny uniforms and the likes of Victoria develop eating disorders in order to do so, then are told by Judy and the other old wheezebag that they look ‘heavy’. duck that for a game of soldiers. It’s all fake- fake smiles, fake eyelashes, and they work their butts off for duck all, then have to get surgery to sort their bodies out.

Plus they keep going on about being world famous- aside from the programmes about them nobody outside America would know or care who they are.

Total mugs game mate

To be fair regarding the height issue I got the impression that was Charlotte Jones' issue and the other two had no power to dispute it.

If height can be an elimination factor during training camp, then they should set a height requirement. It is absolutely crushing to be eliminated during training camp for something you absolutely cannot change. It is unnecessarily cruel.

Agree so much with this! The cheerleaders seem to be brainwashed into being desperate to get into the DDC. It's like feminism doesnt exist in Dallas. And the previous DDC cheerleaders from the 60s, 70s, etc still clinging on to their big hair and re living their past! Whoever designed this has done a great job, the women really think they are part of something very special (and I Appreciate all their dancing and athletic skills, dont get me wrong), but they are bigged up so much and have bigged themselves up so much - I dont know, it's all very American. Id love to see a British version where they take the piss out of themselves and go to the pub and say, fucks sake, can you believe we did all that for minimum wage? As for being America's Sweethearts! We can all call ourselves whatever we want, doesnt make it true. I think that's for America to decide, not DCC.

Quite a Christian feel to it all as well, which was bizarre to me given the dance moves, the clothing, etc And I would really struggle to call those women in charge "ma'am"!

I was fascinated watching it but also found it deeply depressing: eating disorders, vanity, faux Christianity, women virtually stripping to complement the men's game, women not supporting women and poor Victoria, DCC seems to have dominated her life. Her mother has a lot to answer for.

Edit: also the man who made their boots was revolting. He made sure he shook hands with them all to show them how snugly the boots should fit. What a perv. You know exactly what he was going to use that hand for later.

I don't think it was anything to do with her height. I think Charlotte Jones wanted a 36 squad instead of 38 she seemed very pushy about it, and they just seemed to be the two she wanted out. It back fired because she came across as a *itch rather than a big business woman.
I agree with other people the whole place as cultish vibes. Women thanking them for the best time of there lives, when they are paid a ridiculous amount, doing two jobs, not allowed to so much as look at a footballer, and then hobble off at 25 for major surgery!!

I've been watching Making The Team on MTV and there has been a girl cut because she was too tall.

Charlotte did come across really bad when Kelli was visibly upset at having the make that final cut and she just told her she'd have the easiest conversation. Like no, that's probably one of the hardest things to do when the person they're cutting absolutely deserved to be there.

I totally agree, but I think it was just the big boss's excuse. I imagine that made it worse than usual for the two cutting her as usually the candidate is like 'I will come back next year better' but in this case it was just 'you're really good but we're cutting you anyway.' I genuinely think if she hadn't intervened so strongly on the matter of height then it wouldn't have mattered. I get the impression no-one says no to the Jones family.

I genuinely believe if she had been average height there would have been another excuse to cut her, I bet there's been similarly petite women make the cut over the years.

Money is power and to be fair they are the owners so I would imagine you say no to them and you are out on your ear quicker than you can say boo.

Charlotte does not come across well in the Netflix series I don't think.
She doesn’t no, which is strange because in making the team she is the opposite. In fact all of them look good on it. I don’t think the Netflix show has done many of them any favours tbh.

She def doesn’t come across as a ‘woman’s woman’ quite the opppsite…. She’s happy to keep them on little pay, draconian rules rather than champion them
