I read this and I have questions! So are they saying instead of serum and moisturiser you would do the following:

1. Cleanse
2. Tone
3. Liquid exfoliate
4. Essence
5. SPF

I am wondering how moisturising the essence is as I can’t quite imagine not using moisturiser. Honestly, I find a lot of skincare stuff so confusing and I thought I was reasonably knowledgable.

I understood that an essence was to be used as an extra hydrating step pre serum and definitely followed by a moisturiser - I thought it was supposed to help absorption of the following products rather than replace them, and wouldn't be enough to moisturise and protect the skin for the whole day.
My other issue with that article is the emphasis on exfoliation - seems over the top.

This is correct - essences are best used as after spritzing/toning and before serums/moisturiser.

I think also having steps as tone then liquid exfoliant is misleading too because my toner is my liquid exfoliant but i have other toners that are hydrating and i use them when I don’t exfoliate or use vitamin A

Does anyone else’s moisturiser cause pilling?
Same thing with day & night moisturiser despite not using any other products?!
Can anyone reccomend some that don’t do this?! Thanks x

Oh no that’s annoying ! I swear by the boots hyaluronic sleep mask gel & cosrx snail jizz & then either Bobbi brown vitamin e face base - which is stunning or I really like the aveeno one that Molly Mae raved about for the day & then evening same first two steps and annoyingly I’ve fallen in love with the tascha water cream moisturizer with a bit of elemis oil on top - absolutely stunning ! X

Maybe try something less rich, I get this with heavy moisturisers. Currently using the inkey list peptide moisturiser for night and beauty pie oxygen infusion for day!

There are a number of reasons your products may be pilling. It may be that the products are not absorbing into your skin, it could be that they aren't compatible with the products you apply afterwards, you may be applying too much or you may need to exfoliate.

yeah, did I read somewhere if one product is oil based and the other water based it can cause pilling? - not sure tho. I’m here to receive the advice, not give it out 😂

I get pilling if I use loads of different products before make up or if I've been heavy handed applying them. I'm not a natural 'less is more' person so there's rarely a pea sized amount being used. When I'm more cautious with amounts, I don't.

Oh and if one if my serums or make up primer has a silicone base, I have to use minimal moisturiser, suitable sunscreen and nothing else with it or it will definitely pill

Where does one start to upgrade their skincare routine at the age of 46?? I’ve mainly used pretty basic products as my skin is reactive and sensitive but it’s looking very dull, saggy and wrinkly now 🫠 so need to show it some love. There are just so many products, where do you even start? I’ve been reluctant to try anything too expensive in case I react to it and then left with an unusable product but maybe it’s easier to return theses days if that happens? X

Anyone have any blackhead removal/prevention tips? Have oily skin so very prone to them unfortunately ☹
The La Roche Posay cicaplast baume is hyped up on social media for helping with blackheads/sebaceous filaments and it’s worked for me. I didn’t take it on holiday to try to reduce how much stuff I took away with me and my skin really missed it!

My advice is to start with one thing at a time, maybe a cleanser at first. If your skin isn’t cleansed properly there is no point in piling on a gorgeous moisturiser/serum as those products wont be able to be absorbed to do their job!

Steaming helped mine so much. It wasn’t cheap but I got a Panasonic steamer from boots and it’s brilliant. I use it every other day, and exfoliate once a week and use Elemis papaya peel once a week.

I started using an exfoliant after seeing that as we age we hold onto dead skin more which can make face look dull and dry. I also have sensitive skin and use the Nivea chemical exfoliant a couple of times a week. It’s left on overnight and I think it does help to make me look a bit more awake and fresh faced (I’m 47)

if you have TikTok Erica Taylor is great. She tends to do make up tips but also advises on skin care for 40’s and beyond ☺️
