Ukraine Russia War #14

Russian reporting of the above story turns out to be 'somewhat missing the nuances' as it usually does...

And Peskov has compared things in Georgia to 2014 Ukraine as though it's some kind of great revelation that people of a former soviet state when given a choice of the EU or being under Russia again will (a) pick the 'anything but Russia' option...
... and (b) for reasons he claims to not understand, completely inexplicably kick off when their government (of disputed status) decides to stop their progress in order to favour Russia.

Support from Romania potentially in the balance, next round of voting this coming weekend and IIUC (a) all depending on which coalition get their act together, and (b) the pro-russian groups all declared their total support for the 'out of nowhere' guy.

Ref:

Also noted the candidate complained about how his number of views dropped from tens of millions down to tens of thousands, overnight, as if this were some sort of surprise.

Carlson bringing Lavrov to a wider audience, Lavrov not saying much that's new except for bigging-up the new(ish) missile type to stoke the fear with the usual 'Russia does not want nuclear war', with some extra spice of 'Russia ready to send additional messages if the west does not draw necessary conclusions'...

Demands being the usual 'no nato, no foreign troops/bases ever, hand over occupied regions including parts not occupied' plus a couple of bogus demands based on dishonest representations, things that didn't happen etc i.e. no change.

[ And remember wrt the whole 'nuclear war' thing - not going to happen while oligarchs' families are safely over here enjoying not being in Russia. Much as I don't like the idea of billionaires with money of potentially interesting cleanliness buying the posh end of London, I can see it effectively acting as a sort of insurance policy. ]

This is subject adjacent as I couldn’t see a thread for it.
Does anybody know what the fall of Syria will mean for it’s people? Are the rebels the same as the Taliban which means strict religous rule?

Read some of the replies to this and it should give you and idea of what's going on -

Or this -

On that first one, my own reaction surprised me, seeing it as on balance not entirely unbalanced... the second one was surely written by Dmitri Peskov himself...

(adjacent but not unconnected, Russia also *potentially(?) losing its only naval base in the Med)

There's a broad collection of rebelling forces, the extreme religious component being just a part of it but unfortunately not an insignificant one so Syria has a tricky time ahead of it if the people are to stand a chance of having some form of non-dictated society.
Though there's a lot of Syrian refugees already heading back home from Turkiye and the total there was in the millions (quick but unchecked search says 3.5 to 4 million), hopefully their experiences haven't led them to hate everyone outside Syria (and having seen conditions in a lot of the refugee camps I would imagine at best 'mixed feelings').

Might say it's all over bar the shouting but there's going to be a *lot* of shouting.

I'm not sure what you mean, unless it's that anyone pointing out the US's interests in the Middle East must be a Russian sympathiser?

No, I was clearly commenting on the content of that that particular tweet - the vehemence, the wording, the inclusion of reference to EU 'illegal sanctions', goes some way beyond a basic 'pointing out'.

And isn't that what this is all about? Russia still has Iran, but mind you the guy on the left died with President Raisi in a mysterious helicopter crash since then.

There's a whole new Order trying to evolve, with Russia, China at the forefront, along with Iran, North Korea & 2 or 3 African nations who have tinpot dictatorships propped up by the Wagner Group/Russia.

[ Leaving aside some interesting lists of alleged and/or confirmed assadist collaborator accounts on twitter that include some seen-before names of 'Kremlin fanclub' but which at this point I'd not want to re-post until it's pruned somewhat, just in case... ]

The beloved chief stalker of Trump is doing his boost-the-not-truth thing again

And in posted-words here:
ref: in a series of tweets that gets rearranged thanks to the crap 'relevance' ranking (with the app not seeming to have a setting for making 'sort by date' the default)
Regarding NATO invitation, it is premature to speak about it with President Trump, because he is not yet in the White House. However, I do intend to speak with President Biden soon and raise this issue. Because he is the current President and a lot depends on his position.

Thanks fully community noted but those can turn out to be a bit temporary when attached to posts from particular accounts.
