Now they're talking about banning porn sites for under 18s. Do they have any idea how the internet works?

A VPN takes seconds to download, lots of stuff happens in private groups/chats on big tech and tens of thousands of offshore sites wont take any notice.

I'm all for protecting children, but they're very naive to think they can just make rules and solve the issue.

What about twitter? Will over 18s really want to hand over personal details to such sites?

Porn websites in the UK will be legally required to verify the age of their users under new internet safety laws.
The legislation, which is part of the draft Online Safety Bill, aims to give children better protection from explicit material.
The measures, to ensure users are 18 or over, could see people asked to prove they own a credit card or confirm their age via a third-party service.
Sites that fail to act could be fined up to 10% of their global turnover.
 
The problem with this is it gives the illusion of doing something, when in fact it does precious little - drives it underground and potentially does more harm exposing children to the extreme content.

More education is needed, the number of parents that give devices to children with no restrictions is probably significant
 
Parental controls and Internet providers restricting content only goes so far. It doesn't stop direct messages with all sorts of things being sent to children/teenagers (usually from anonymous accounts) i read a book called stolen focus which talked about kids having less freedom than they've ever had yet parents hand them devices which can then access everything, was incredibly thought provoking. I don't think criminalising porn would work but maybe having to sign up to these sites before viewing would or doing away with free adult content.
 
It's been a problem for decades, but the answer definitely isn't slapping a porn rule at the last minute on a bill that's been years in the making.

They probably know it won't make any difference, but they're desperate for some good headlines to distract. That's probably what this is all about. They were talking about this a couple of ago but decided against it, now with party gate and Boris Keir saville gate I think they've decided to include it.

Yep like the government stuff it only scratches the surface. Devices need to be locked down so only a few apps can be used, can only chat with a few people and only certain websites are allowed. It's not easy to do with the current range of devices for sale in shops. Or children should never be left alone yet alone have their own devices. When the family had a computer and it was in the lounge it was much less problematic. All of this becomes impossible to do once their teens. I remember 30 years ago at 13ish using a portable TV and VHS player to watch an 18 horror movie. Tech has made this infinitely easier these days.

Kids are more likely to be stuck at home for the fear of what could happen outside despite it being safer than ever and online activities are far more likely to damage.
 
Kids will access whatever they want an honestly most kids are better at navigating the Internet than most adults are, there's no way you are gonna be able to stop them getting what they want bill or no bill, hell even when I was a kid we cheated our way into being able to watch 18+horror films

the best way to do it is to educate them properly on these things, somtimes we don't give them the credit they are due with how clever they can be an how much they will listen, if my kid was caught watching porn at age 13 or 14 whatever the last thing I wanni do is get mad at them, take away phones or laptops etc an tell them not to go back to it, cause at the end of the day they will probably rebel an go find another way to watch which could be worse an expose them to more, what I need to be doing is sitting them down an explaining to them what's going on with their feelings, urges, puberty etc, an what the difference between porn, underage sex, rape etc all is an tell them WHY all this is a 18+ and why they shouldn't be on them and why when they get older some things are OK an some things are not, I'd like to think that they would know all these differences by that age but it would still help to sit them down an have a proper conversation with them, it's better to give them a understanding about it than to scream, yell, take things away, get mad at them

We used to in the family say no to the under 13s for using fb, twitter, insta etc but they just went to friends an set it up, so saying no especially when friends have these things do nothing, so now the new rule is they can have them but it has to be us that set them up which means we can make them private an keep a eye on them, I'd much rather with social sites allow them an have it set up with all the privacy an keep a eye on it than say no an have them set it up themselves with 0 privacy

Kids at the end of the day will always get into somthing, no matter how hard you try they will find a way, so sit them down an explain things
 
I put the newspaper article on another thread lastnight and wondered where would they stop if they're allowed to ask for ID for porn sites why not every site ?

How are they even going know its real ID? What's stopping kids from taking ID from a parents wallet an using it? Or getting fake ones, we used to get fake IDs for getting into nightclubs an it worked back then, what are they going do, expect you to go onto a webcam so they can talk to you an you show your ID, how stupid are they

That seems to be what they're going to do, passwords and driving licence etc. I can't see it working either, didn't diageo try something similar and they had to revert back to a silly system of asking for date of birth before entry to their sites.

Subscriptions 😂 that could cause a lot of relationship problems if the partners come across a debit for redtube 😬

Fake IDs are still very much a thing or just pinching someone else's. Apparently they're asked for but never looked at. I remember my kids talking about online safety educational stuff and telling me all the ways the others got round it. Not mine of course, they're angels. 😂

Lol fake IDs are always going be a thing, we had it when we were younger an the kids now a days have it, every generation has their own way of getting them, they did manage to lower the use of them here by offering under 18s nightclubs an they sorta become all the rage for the younger ones so they didn't seem intrested in the adult nightclubs but you will never truely get rid of fake IDs until bouncers actually do a proper job of making sure it's not fake an the picture matches 100% but it's all money to the clubs the more thats in them an the more popular the club the more they will want bouncers

A place I know of had to stop offering teenage discos as they were getting totally out of hand? Why? Something called the rainbow effect, was to do with lipstick.....definitely porn related.
These were kids! I went to teenage discos that did not happen.

Google can remove the images no? Porn sites can put things in place to make sure people have to register before viewing?
 
Has anyone seen some of the porn easily accessible on Twitter? I'm an occasional user and saw it when having a nosey at someone's liked Tweets. I had no idea until then. It's everywhere, how do they get rid of it all? (They can't)

That's crazy, I don't think anything truly bad happened at the under 18 nightclubs here, I mean not much more than what would happen at schools an such, an they did help to keep them from getting into actual nightclubs that would have exposed them to a more adult environment with drinks, possibly getting spiked an much worse, so in a way I feel like the under 18 nightclubs was much better for them, they could get that "nightclub" feeling but in a much safer environment an they did get them fun drinks like mocktails to give them the experience of a type of adult drink
