Right, someone needs to tell these home-counties bred, red-brick educated, literary luvvies that 1. Liking negronis, diptyque candles, plants and baked goods aren’t personality traits worthy of writing about and 2. Living in Brixton doesn’t give you edge.

This. And I can guarantee you she does not 'go for a walk' in Crack City aka Myatts Field Park (I grew up in Brixton & still live in Sarf)

I mean, imagine thinking your friends living in the same neighbourhood, makes you a cosmopolitan Londoner.

to me, it just screams of someone who has a very closed off social group, who socialises with people exactly the same as them, with the exact same interests and preferences and they all gravitate towards a similar area.

she could honestly move to a little Home Counties village and it would be the exact same mindset. Closed off, echo chamber group of people. I bet she doesn’t have a single friend outside of the Uni-educated, hipster, pretentious cliché she prescribes to.

Agreed. There were trustafarians here in the 70s/80s but not in such quantity or with such high smug/ tweeness quotient

Sorry 'Leaf Arbuthnot'? That is a real name?
Yep and a strong literary pedigree ;)

Obviously no one not even her friends and family care enough to update her bio to King Charles 😆

Is there anyone here lucky enough to not know Flora Gill? She’s a cookie cutter of all our favourites who fancies herself as a writer and gets a platform because of her father AA Gill, the late, great food writer 🐔 She writes about millennial issues
also Leaf Arbuthnot

i’m still stuck on leaf arbuthnot 🤣 what a name. sounds like the villain in a jilly cooper novel.

flora gill did write a very beautiful article about her dad a year after his passing (i think in the style section of the st) and i thought his talent may have passed on….. but everything i’ve read afterwards has been awful. these magazines wouldn’t print a single letter from her if not for her surname.

You’ve got to be joking 😩😩😩

how patronising and smug.

I’m sure Liz Truss is at home, waiting on her severence pay at around £20k, working out how much Public Duty Costs Allowance (PDCA) she’ll claim (currently set at a maximum of £115,000 pa) and wondering how long it’ll be before she gets her dame hood… but then she pauses and feels slightly down and thinks “you know what I need? Some unsolicited advice from a mediocre columnist who bas no experience whatsoever in a political career!”

Flora Gill's writing and (online) personality is dire - IMO ofc.

I've also seen Sophia M-C whinge about the burden of her name. So also awful and clueless.
Ughhhhh yes, re. Sophia and the "burden" of being a Coutts 🙄 (please just duck off). Also, WHY does she go by So-fiya rather than So-feeya? I suppose for the same reason Hannah is Dolly. Give me a break. Posh boring women with nothing remotely interesting or original about themselves having to find something to make them stand out.

To be fair So-fiya is actually the classic English pronounciation- So-feeya is European, but more commonly used these days.
Why are they ALL so boring with all their opportunities? I’d do such cool things and travel everywhere if I wasn’t dirt poor and write a book about that if I was a good writer rather than another derivative book about millennial life :) Their education could bring so much good overseas..

No disrespect to the late, great Deborah James but you can tell what audience this book is aimed at- it’s mocked up like a luvvie book

Oh I had no idea about the English pronunciation (despite being English 😅). You learn something new every day haha! X

The way Bella Mackie always mocks influencers/people who do ads is so annoying. She's privileged to not have to do sponsored posts, stop thinking you're somehow morally above or opposed to it...
Give it a few years and the new lot of over privileged, with contacts in the right places, indentikit blondes and rich brunettes will come along and she will soon change her tune.

I mean, she might not if she is happy away from the spotlight but something tells me Bella and her kind can never just quietly exist and enjoy their lifestyles they have to be seen as something “more”so she will be shilling for high end brands soon enough.

One example of a posh woman in the media who is actually talented and
likeable is Phoebe Waller Bridge.

I’m sure her privilege helped her success, but she really is a good writer. She doesn’t pretend to be someone she’s not, but manages to explore universal themes in her work, like grief, love, and family relationships, AND somehow makes it hilarious.
