Topshop nostalgia #2

Are we back friends????

Love this news, love the possibility of a store. Appreciate it’s not the best time/economy for it, but do hope their next step is to make the whole proposition a bit more premium - even “just” elevated basics made of 100% organic/ideally sustainable natural fibres would be 🤌 and then a small trend led offering which is where the cool can live. I honestly think that’s where ASOS flopped with it, they just used the name on masses and masses of product, even if it was their cooler fast fash bits.

I don't know if there's a market today for Topshop to be honest, I think the market overall has moved on from what TS had to offer that made it so huge.

The edgy rock chick dabbling in high fashion buying Elle magazine, the Kate Lanphear crossed with early Fashiontoast mixed with Kate Moss seasoned with the Olsen twins with a side of Alexa Chung. TS was successful because it was marketed to fans of the fashion pack. Now, fashion influences are from all over the place it's hard to say what the fashion is. You've got the Hadid girls and random Tik Tokkers and low-level influencers.

The girls are running around in longjohns showing all their nether crevices and big jackets, or big baggy crap, but all cheap tat you can get anywhere. People wanted Topshop because it was Topshop. You didn't know you wanted it until you saw it in Topshop. The middle market of Reiss etc is just so boring and "mature" in comparison. Cooler brands like Stories/Cos have got a bunch of unflattering baggy masculine overpriced crap. AllSaints on the edgier side have lost the plot design-wise. None of these have the wide appeal Topshop did. There is a gap for a Topshop return, but I don't think there is the market demand because people are not brand loyal anymore.

Can’t believe I’ve only just found this thread. Top shop was the coolest place back in the day.

although agree if it came back, it either wouldn’t be the same shop, or it would be a shop for 30 somethings trying to recreate their youth, so would just be dated.

I absolutely loved the Alexa Chung inspired dresses, and the long line cardigans, and it looked cool when I was 19. But now I’m a mum in my 30s I’d just look mumsy. Also my life and style has changed since then and it’s all jeans and t shirt now.

having said that i did buy a pair of top shop culottes on Vinted that can’t have been from 2010 as no one wore them back then 😂 they’re really nice for my mum wardrobe though!

I am under no illusion that it will be like it was in its heyday (I was too young and poor for it then anyway!) but I think they could be really clever about it and make it appealing to us millennials in the same way that A&F/Hollister moved away from their old image and reputation of only wanting "cool" skinny people wearing their clothes to what they are now.

Their basic stuff was always really good so they could do something similar to Uniqlo. Then do collabs with stylish celebrities (maybe not Kate Moss now though) for the trendy/“edgy” bits. I’d be tempted back then for sure.

Ah good old Topshop. Bought some nice bits from there especially a couple of tops which turned out to be my pulling tops lol! One was a crop top in velvet! Nicer than it sounds i promise

I recall going in the massive topshop in oxford street and a really nice sales assistant picked out a nice pleather jacket for me.

I will never forgive Philip Green for closing topshop, DP etc

Topshop has such a special place in my heart. I used to work there when I was fresh out of uni and still figuring out what on earth I was going to do with my life 😂 and I absolutely loved it, I loved the discount, the clothes, the girls who worked there, it was just so much fun.

I’d love for it to come back, I’m still yet to find a pair of skinny jeans I love more than the Joni’s 😭

Oh my god can’t believe I stumbled across this thread when I was just reminiscing about topshop yesterday. I used to work at Oxford Circus and could always rely on the topshop to find a last minute weekend outfit. It was always guaranteed that you’d find something in there! I feel like there is such a gap in the market now for millennials. I used to LOVE asos and it’s still my go to, mainly for ease but I struggle a lot more to find something on there and find it a bit overpriced now. Their topshop range is awful quality. I also find that with most high street/fast fashion online retailers now the clothing shrinks after one wash? Whereas I still have old topshop stuff that I still wear and is in great condition after all this time. Phillip green really fucked up!

Topshop jewellery was lovely. Sadly I have an allergy to nickel (I think) and I remember buying earrings and necklaces there that brought me out in a rash.

I've been buying Uniqlo basics and am pleasantly surprised with the built-in bra tops. Topshop used to be my go to for t shirts and vests.

I still have a lovely pink strapless top from there that I bought in maybe 2009? I had a similar green one which is sadly long gone

Searching for summer trousers and all the nice stuff is for bloody men?! Hemp is such an underused fabric and all the women’s hemp stuff is yoga pants and other more casual things. Where are the tailored hemp and linen trousers for women

This thread brings back great shopping memories. If there was a party/clubbing night I’d head straight to Topshop for a new outfit and always found something amazing to wear. I still have a ‘Moto’ denim jacket from 2004 that looks brand new. And their lacy knickers and thongs 3 for £12 couldn’t be beaten for quality.
